When I moved here (Woodland Park) in 2007 the old timers told me you could ride from here to Breckenridge without a plate. That's what began this whole thing. It took two seasons to put the route together. Most of my exploration time was spent trying to find a ford across the South Platte River.

There is no longer a legal water crossing, primarily due to trail closures following the Hayman fire. This means we must cross the South Platte River at Lake George. This also means we are forced onto asphalt and therefore a license plate is required.

2009

2009 was the first year of the ride. We started in Monument, rode to Breck, camped for the night, and rode back the next day. The ride home was supposed to be easy, but everyone wanted more technical trails so we ended up modifying the route for more of a challenge. We had ten total riders, with a main group of 5 (Ryan, Colin, Randy, Jeff, and myself)

2010

In 2010 we tried it as a one-day ride, this made the ride a serious distance challenge. It was very popular. We started with 16 riders at the beginning of the day. At the top of Georgia Pass we had 20 riders. And I think we had 9 remaining at the end of the day. We pulled off the trail not-too-long after dark.

BreckTrek 2011

2011 was supposed to be almost the same as 2010, but with some harder sections like 735, technical singletrack.

Unfortunately we had a couple late winter storms and we couldn't get over either Georgia or Boreas Pass into Breckenridge, so our trip ended in Jefferson.

This was the only ride that had singletrack and it was the only time we did not make it all the way to Breckenridge.

16 riders started, 8 finished.

BreckTrek 2012

I was late putting this year’s ride together so I thought I would have a smaller group because of it, but at the starting line we had 25 attendees (a new record). The route changes slightly from year to year and this year’s route was the hardest, but it was a route I've been trying to do for years. I really liked the route, but the attrition rate was a little high, so we’ll modify the route accordingly this year.

25 riders started, 8 finished.

BreckTrek 2013

By 2013 the route was pretty well standardized, so I had some time to concentrate on other aspects of the ride; so I drug the whole smelly crew into Spencer's Restaurant for a spectacular buffet. A bunch of bikes started. Some of them finished.

Maybe - I'd be happy to Sweep as always

2013 I did it on my 2012 Gas Gas EC300 (2-stroke) and completed Brecktrek; it did it fine, just plan your oil. Although I brought Fuel and pretty much empty the saddle bags with the MSR dromedary bags before night fall. Otherwise I typically use the Honda XR650R as that seems to handle long distances a lot better and the higher speeds.

Bike Requirements:
1) A LICENSE PLATE.
2) A WORKING headlight; we will be getting back after dark (plan on 10:00pm).
3) An OHV tag.
4) A minimum cruising speed of 55 MPH.
5) At least an 80 mile fuel range.

Almost any small dualsport will do. The 250-650cc thumpers tend to be the best. The better your suspension is, the easier the ride will be.

Conditions range from steep and loose, to tight and technical, with two very short sections of paved highway and lots of wide open flat dirt roads in between. There will be lots of whoops, roots, rocks and ruts in the technical parts.

Great bikes for the ride:
KTM RFS bikes, WR450F, DR350, CRF450X, XR650R, XR400, XR600. But remember, rider ability has much more to do with success rate than the bike you bring.

Notable bikes:
One KLR650 has attempted BT and didn't get too far (but you’re welcome to give it a try).
Four KTM 950’s have joined over the years; one finished, but it was brutal (way to go, Ryan).
One KTM 640 Adv tried it and succeeded, but once again, it was difficult.
At least one CRF250X has completed BT over the years. I believe the smallest to attempt it was an XT225, but it did not finish.

I might be able to lead or sweep the B group if needed, depending on the date.

Looks like a fun ride. I live near Georgia Pass (first pic) and don't have a plate on my 300, so I can't join in.

We are getting hammered with snow, so I think it's going to be a late melt out this year.

I'll be the first to know when Georgia Pass is passable (I ride it 3-4 times a week), so I can certainly volunteer that info if you'd like.

I take it you guys are going down the south fork of the swan into Breck?

That would be sweet to know the status of Georgia Pass. Last year Stephenson and I went down first and OMG we could not get back up to let the others know the dtstus due to it being pretty much a half frozen river. I would think this year would have a late melt as you mentioned. At least everyone just continued down into Swan and all was good.

Ah, yes I've been caught out by that frozen river of a trail. I HAVE to make it back up to get home (no plate to ride home the long, long way on pavement over Hoosier pass).

There is also another route down to Breck from GP via S.O.B. trail. I've ridden up it once (down should be easier, but I've never tried it). I'm flying solo most of the time and it seems like a good place to break a leg or get stuck, so I usually avoid it. That route probably melts out later as well.
