Kirk's Panniers - ordering information and customer's builds thread

So I've had my boxes on for a week now, can't be happier with them. I though the quality was great and Kirk did a great job with them. I went with the brushed metal look, I spent a couple of evenings scratching them with some scotch brite pads. I have gotten a few of compliments on them already.




They even held up when I dropped the bike today.

I found a decal maker last week in IL that I'm going to try out. I'm hoping to be approving the proof this week. Then it should take 10 business days. It's a lot more affordable than I thought it was.

Product testing in it's finest! Your bike looks great. I've always preferred the brushed aluminum look to powder myself.

I decided to paint my Panniers by Kirk a nice black.
Several coats of krylon and 2 coats of an automotive clear.
I think these look even better than before.

This was a re-do because he needed to drop the bags a bit, so I did have to make a small exhaust cut-out to clear his low pipe after all.

I will be offering his other set on ebay this week starting at one penny. They will be blems because they have mounting holes drilled in the back already.



And yes, I will be offering powder again. There's only one catch - the new coater is a 3 hour round-trip drive from my house.

So.... I will wait until I have 4 or 5 jobs to be powdered lined up, or just drive up every two weeks; whichever comes first. That way it's worth my time to make the drive.

His quality is good, and his turn-around was 5 days on the dot. That's more like it.

We finally get Mike all ironed out...





Then I move onto a toolbox for a 2nd gen KLR650...



Customer specs: 5" x 5" x 12".



My TIG welds get a little tighter with each bead.



A band of the same aluminum to reinforce the open end. Footman loops for customer supplied cinch strap.



Supports fabbed out of 1" x 1/4" aluminum flat bar.



Welding 1/4" to .080" was a bit of a challenge, but it's fun figuring out new things.

Now that I got my work complete for the day, I can play with my BBQ project some more!

Forgot to mention that the foam used to seal the lid on the toolbox didnt hold up too well. I ended up pulling it out and using some RTV sealant in a 1/8" layer on the entire inside of the lid to create a perfect water tight seal. Still one of the best upgrades done to my bike!!!

These are better than the first set - everywhere! The new powder coat guy is better too - much better.

Thanks for the heads-up. I put an extra band of al. around the end of this toolbox. Maybe the single layer was too thin and cut into it? I'll try something different next time.

Yeah, the new coater is fast and good. A combination that doesn't happen very often.

1500 miles and 2.5 days later, the panniers are awesome!

The Bottle opener came was extremely handy.
