I'm watching today's race from NBC Sports Channel. Spectacular boats. I don't understand the physics of how they can go so much faster than the wind.

This really is pretty neat, if you can get over the obscene cost.

Cost is no big deal - the New Zealand government has spent NZ$36,000,000 of tax payer's money to fund our boat and campaign. With 4 million people that's a lot of money per head. If we win, it's worth more than $36 million to the country.

Finals of the challenger series started on Saturday and Race 1 couldn't have been more dramatic.

Luna Rossi broke a dagger board before the start. Right up until time ran out they were making emergency repairs with a hacksaw, glue gun and whatever on a piece of carbon fibre that must cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Then a close start. Then the Italians' repair job failed and the race looked to be a boring one horse affair.

Until the New Zealand boat made a turn, up on its boards, in close to maximum winds and at 45 mph. Suddenly both noses plunged into the water, and thing half submerged. It was like driving into a wall. Everyone aboard was thrown forward and two guys went overboard. The bodywork took some damage but they finished and won.

They called off race two because the winds were too high. That's a safety precaution introduced when a Swedish crewman died in practices.

Next race, wind permitting, is Sunday at 6pm ET on NBC Sports network.

Race 3 and 4 today. Not televised. Supposed to be on the America's Cup YouTube Channel (which is horribly organized.)

But click on the link and it says it's not available in your area (that being the US.) Dumb.

Watching this event is really hard. I remember when ESPN carried the races and they were easy to find. The thing has really gone in the shitter since everyone began squabbling.

Boats are so fragile that it's a long shot that they will even finish a race without a breakdown. Starting to get embarrassing. Exciting to watch though when they are racing.

Looks like Oracle needs more wind to be competitive.I think that fourth race was the first to be sailed in 20+ knots.Once behind NZL could not pass.Looking forward to more.

Amazing technology! I'm sure some "Traditionalists" would want the old 12 meter yachts back but the object is to go as fast as possible! I wonder if the costs went down any as the boats do look a little simpler than the old style! :lol3

I belive they're ruinously expensive. That's why so few teams competed for this America's Cup.

Let them sail stock Hobie Cat 16's. Then you would have a lot of competition.

The America's Cup has always been about uber rich groups battling it out for an ugly cup. Let them spend their billions. I'd bet the tech trickles down to boats that cost half what one of those cats cost. :lol3

read somewhere Oracle is spending over $100 million on their two boat program. They were not challenged by any other US team. And presently are getting their asses handed to them :lol3

Team NZ has always been partially funded by the taxpayers.
It would be a brave politician that tried to take away funding from such a feel good story.
