Nah, it's entirely stress. Too much stress on the gear material and poof! How much stress it takes depends on what the gear material is, heat treat, and the size of the gear.

I've had a saying since my road-racing days.........."The metal NEVER forgets!".

But short-shifting, in and of itself, doesn't hurt anything. Never has, never will.

    I miss "car94" :cry

i short shift all the time in a car so i keep the rpm down and save fuel.

on my 125cc was the only bike i have ever hit the red line / had the engine reving like hell.

on alll other bikes i keep the rev no were near the red line.

I reckon I could write a forum plugin that automatically closes any thread with a reply containing the word "oil".

You think baldy would install it? Could make things a lot more civil around here!

I read this entire thread and still am not sure...what is short shifting again and do you do it with or without oil in the gearbox?

Driving any vehicle (car or bike) at the rpm at which max torque is achieved provides the best fuel efficiency. Short shifting doesn't save fuel: not starting the engine saves fuel!

True. But you should add: Only IF you actually use (nearly) the full torque.

You must have not read the entire thread then, as "short shifting" was defined numerous times in an attempt to help the, poor, benighted car94.

Quite simply, a "short-shift" is a shift that takes place sometime prior to what is necessary, usually defined as prior to the peak in engine output. Not sure what oil has to do with anything; any vehicle in which the operator has direct control over the selected gear can technically be "short-shifted."

a n.a. gas engine always has best fuel economy at the greatest intake vacuum. period. your qualifier is correct. i'm just expanding on it. i.e. if your motor makes 150 ft.lbs and it takes only 25 to maintain your desired speed, the best fuel mileage is determined by what gear you can keep the throttle plates near closed and still maintain speed.

Hi my name is Ken and i'm a short shifter. I have been short shifting for decades. I used too only short shift on weekends, with someone else. Now i short shift all the time. Even when I am alone, sometimes early in the morning I'll short shift, just to get the day started.

Your suspension works better at low RPMs. Next time you are getting beat up on a rough trail, UPSHIFT (aka as shortshifting) 1 or 2 gears and roll the throttle on. Things will smooth out and you can maintain the same speed.

If you short shift and are off an on the throttle, it is possible to damage your transmission. Keep the rear wheel driving.

As said before, short-shifting hurts nothing.

Think of shortshifting this way. If you have an automatic transmission in a car, and you drive it to the grocery store, the transmission is effectively shortshifting. If you take that same car to a road course, and try to get the lowest lap times, the auto trans is NOT short-shifting. Best analogy I got.
