http://naata.org/index.php/2011/03/canada-to-allow-vehicle-imports-from-mexico/ The above says canada has passed laws to allow Mexican vehicles to be imported. Does anyone know when this will actually go into effect? I'm tempted to buy a 660 tenere and bring it up.
Transport Canada allows for the importation of any vehicle from any country on earth, if the machine is 15 yrs old or older. Anything new to 14 yrs old, only from the USA, and only if it's on the RIV inclusion list.
Did you read my link? The law was changed in 2011 to allow vehicles from Mexico, under 15 years old, just like from the USA. But as far as I can tell the regulations haven't been put in to effect yet.
I read your link. It appears the word "perhaps" can be used. If you're confident people in authority will let you bring in your bike, this is a perfect example for all of us to watch.
I read the article and this stood out to me: The details still have to be worked out and it will be several years before vehicles can actually come into Canada from Mexico, but at least the governing legislation is now in place. Is 3 years "several"? I don't know, but I would guess unless you find something on the RIV, you are SOL until that changes.
Well that was the point of this thread. Someone must know how this progressing. The law was definitely passed and it is on the government law website as current and in effect law. We just need the associated regulations setting out the details.
I'd say the fighting is too late if the law is already passed. It doesn't really matter what the dealers want. The only issue I could see them causing is refusing to sell to Canadians like some dealers in the USA do.
I am making these comments from afar so take them with a grain of salt. One of the big problems with importing vehicles to Canada from Mexico is that Mexico does not allow the reverse. I have several friends who winter in Mexico who are always complaining that they can't bring their Canadian cars with them. Mexico won't allow it. They actually own a second car which they purchased in Mexico and leave there during the summer when they are back home. It is entirely possible that the laws you mention have been passed but are not yet in force and will not be until Mexico supplies the same consideration to Canadians as Canada will be giving to them.
I don't think there's any great conspiracy going on here. If you read the law it says it will take a while to be implemented and will be done in stages. But the law is 100% a valid and passed law. So riv and transport canada just need to get it into practical use.
Be about $10k Canadian by the time you've got it here from what I can tell. If this isn't likely I'll buy one from Europe and use miac to bring it in.
You can bring an outside vehicle and use it temporarily. I believe Mexico has a 3 month limit. Again, this is second hand information so the rules may have changed.
I don't know how it got here, but there is a Mexican made, 2004 VW Beetle running around 100 Mile House. It only has 27k original kms on it and it is actually for sale for $10.5K
There are loopholes for everything. Miac can bring in pretty much any new motorcycle from anywhere in the world if you pay them the $1000 for the paperwork. For cars, another trick I've seen a lot is on land rover defenders. Get an old chassis and put all the new parts on it. Bam, brand new but 15 years old at the same time. I bet the beetle was something similar. But I'm hoping when this law comes into force loopholes won't be necessary. Or yamaha (or honda Africa twin) comes with a mid size adventure bike before I get the Mexican bike.
Where are you getting your price from? The bike is 146,900.00 peso's, according to my google-fu, that's $12,261.11 Canadian before any freight PDI or tax... Assuming you pay no taxes in Mexico, you will still have to pay GST on that, and PST/HST depending on your province.
