I'm riding to NC STATE for graduation this May and I'm trying to find a fun ride.

On the map this route is a dotted line which I think is a dirt road. Is anybody from this area familiar with this route?

    Overstreet creek road

I'm looking for a nice ride from The Blue Ridge to Raleigh area. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Uh...the font on that map is so small and my eyes are not what they used to be. Some location info about that area would help.

    Ok sorry about that.

The route is off of The Blue Ridge Parkway west of Lynchburg and between the 501 and 43 on the Blue Ridge.

Here is another map with some labels

PM ADVRidgeRunner - He has property outside Big Island and knows those dirt roads like the back of his hand.

That looks like a state maintained road and google's images make it appear doable and promising without any gnarly sections or severe stream crossings. Shouldn't be a big deal.

Here is what the road looks like as you turn off BRP
    <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XemivwVPfaNh6AdoiqL4gg?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_-F_vYvN6ZGg/S0DDLrdpZUI/AAAAAAAAQPQ/duywooaedwM/s800/Fullscreen%20capture%20132010%20111636%20AM.jpg" /></a>

151 is like a mini "Tail of the Dragon" unless you get caught behind a mini van or truck. If you take a more paved route, you could spend an hour at the D Day Memorial in Bedford, VA

    Thanks.

I saw that on Google Earth too. It doesn't look too bad.

    I'll also PM ADVRidgeRunner too.

    Thanks for your input

I'm not sure if Overstreet is dirt, maybe, but you'll run out of dirt fast off the mountian heading south. Let us look at a map.

Yeah ok, I think Overstreet is dirt and I think I rode it this spring. Then you are bearing east of Smith Mountian lake into Carolina. East of the lake is nice little roads and rolling hills. What next?

I also showed him the loop we are planning from the Raleigh area to Peaks of Otter... see map at .. Google Maps, search.. related maps.. then Peaks of Otter Day loop. Gives a basic way back from POO or a more interesting route. If you know these roads, give some feed back please.

    Hey Thanks

I found the Otter day loop. It is a little south of Overstreet Creek Rd.

I don't mind dirt, I have a BMW 650 GS , but I will have it loaded for 2 weeks riding and don't want to run into single track.

I'm planing on 3-4 days to get to Raleigh , the graduation at NC State is May 15, my stepdaughter, then the next week to ride around.

I may have to try the Otter loop while I'm there.

When you say running out of dirt do you mean run out of road all together or it changes to pavement ?

Humm, when you get to Gretna... you'll go through the main stop light there at 40. Just down on your left will be a little white diner where locals eat. The "soup beans" on the salad bar will be authentic in every way. Stop and eat there if it's time. Say yes ma'am alot and tip good.

29 to Danville gets boring and you'll be temped to speed, don't, cops. If you get confused at Danville, just head south and east until you figure it out. It seems easy to get lost slipping through there going south. Look at Gretna, take 40 east, after the beans and cornbread. See how 40 east hits 501 south? Might be more fun than 29, just saying. See where 501 comes out in Carolina? Don't miss the beans, hear?

Oh, just saw this sorry. No you'll leave dirt and hit pavement at the bottom. None of the roads leaving the parkway east are really that rough, and if they are a little rough, it won't last too long nor will it be something to get hung up on or stuck.
You could just go to Peaks of Otter, hang a left and ride to Bedford on pavement.
