Here I am in Bonnie Scotland, planning this Summer's vacation to California and Nevada. Amongst other things, SWMBO and I are planning on taking in the Moto GP / AMA Superbike meeting at Laguna Seca. But....can I find the route to purchase a copy of City Navigator North America V6...? As a last resort, I had thought of lugging the laptop with us and buying the software in the US, but the Garmin site indicates that it isn't sold separately from the hardware in the US. So, I'm a bit stuck? Can anyone help me progress this one?
Because the Garmen chips carry a limited amount of data especially when mapping in cities, I would recommend you concider bringing your lap top, or perhaps you could borrow computers from folks on this board to do your down loads. On a 128 chip I can get most of the West Coast and some of Nevada. Not much when your concidering an extended trip here. Also concider that while the GPS is fun to use, years worth of travelers did just fine with a set of maps. You may want to think about taking that extra $tho you would spend on the GPS and maping discs and spending it on another week or so touring here. Just a thought, Bear
We'll be camping at Laguna Seca in our RV for the race weekend (will probably get there on Thursday) and I can bring my laptop if that would be of any help to you. Or, just drop by for a beer and chat if you're so inclined. We will be in the Chaparral campground, space 67 - that's on the ridge above turn two, just outside the access road. Email me of you have any questions. Have fun at the races (it's difficult not to!). Mike
Thanks guys.... 1 Yeah, I've got my eye on a copy of City Select on ebay UK, but it doesn't autouroute on the SPIII, only on the PC. 2 Given that we're only likely to be doing some of California and Nevada in the 18 days that we're there, my 128 MB chip should be fine, but I'd been considering getting a 256 MB one anyway. 3 As for maps.....yeah, the last time we were in your fine country, some 6 years ago, we did 2,000 miles around California and Nevada in a week using nothing but paper maps. The only downside was when our "tent" in the Yosemite campground was double booked and the people who came in while we were at dinner, dumped our maps in a trash can..... However, since then I've grown much too fond of having my Streetpilot staring back at me in the car or on the bike. I've also found that knowing where you are in real-time is an aid to marital harmony and since we're going to be spending 18 days in a Dodge Aurora......unless I can sneak a couple of days on an R1200GS from Dubbelju..... 4 Far Rider, that's very kind of you.....thank you, much appreciated. I might well take you up on your offer and look you up. One of the joys for me in travelling in other countries is meeting local people. We're hoping that a buddy from Boston who used to live in the Bay Area will be able to join us for the Moto GP. He's a friend of an internet contact of mine and never having met us before, gave us a bed and loaned us his Jeep Cherokee and Cagiva Alazzurra to ride Hwy One and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada last time we were in Ca. So, we owe him big style and are hoping we can repay some of that. I have another friend who's a big cheese in an oil company which is associated with the Honda Moto GP factory team. He's promised us factory passes and may even also join us for the event, so I'm hoping that we can do it in style. Thanks also for offering to let me use your laptop, I'll need to work out the best way of progressing things. One advantage of bringing my own would be that I could take an NMEA signal out of the Streetpilot and my wife could navigate in real-time on the laptop. We did that a couple of years ago on a 6,000 mile, three week trip to the South of Spain and it worked very well. I could also back up all my digital photos and perhaps even access the Internet in hotels along the way. Much to think about....however, in the meantime, if anyone wants to do a deal on unlocking their copy of City Navigator to a second GSP unit (mine...) I'd be pleased to hear from you..... Ride safe and slainte mhor. Mike
??? City Select will auto-route on the SPIII There are some minor differences in the amount of info that it gives for turns but it definitely will auto-route with your unit. Is this an un-used copy of City Select with a coupon/customer code certificate ? If it is used how can you tell that at least one unlock code is free ? The mapping CD on its own is worth SFA
Yeah you're quite right. It's a copy of Metroguide USA, not City Select. It doesn't autoroute on the SPIII, only on the PC and it doesn't require an unlock code.
Which version of MetroGuide ? If it is MetroGuide USA v4 then it will auto-route on the GPS (but using the older Teleatlas data). The current product is call MetroGuide North America v6
It's V5. The Garmin site suggests that it'll only autoroute on PC then you can upload the route to the SPIII, but that it won't autoroute on the GPS unit itself. "MetroGuide offers automatic route capability on the PC, and is compatible with Garmin units that do not have automatic route calculation themselves." I reckoned that wouldn't be much help if I needed to re-route on the fly, for example......
I discovered today that City Navigator North America is on sale in the UK. £240 for a fully unlocked version. That's $446 at current exchange rates. Ouch.....! :eek1 Nobody out there want to share a copy...?
