I need to replace the lens (glass portion) of the headlight on my 09 GS.

Do I have any options other than buying the entire assembly from BMW?

The predicted cost might be less than his deductible, or so close that it's not worth putting a claim in for the small reimbursement. :deal

Was it a rock strike on the road? I ask because I have resisted getting one of those $100 headlight guards, but might if I hear that this was caused by an actual rock strike as opposed to running into the back of a garbage truck or something equally clever....:D

Near as I can tell my broken lens was caused by a cheapo lens protector I bought off eBay. I liked the idea of a simple plastic shield that fit between the bezel and the lens, problem is I think the plastic protector placed stress on the edge of the lens causing it to crack.

In other words, DO NOT TRY TO GET BY CHEAP My $45 headlight protector is going to end up costing me over $400 AND I still have to buy another protector.

But at least I use genuine BMW oil filters! :)

If it is just cracked without a chance of pieces falling out,i would superglue or epoxy it.I couldn't do that with mine or i would have.Ed

I too have been on the fence for getting a headlight protector - just for my own clarification are you talking about the plastic film you apply to the headlight or are you talking about a plastic shield that is mounted onto the headlight assembly?

It's just cracked, so while I need to eventually replace it it's not critical. I may get some of the plastic film that adheres to the lens in hopes it will keep it intact until I can find a used one.

I like the look and convenience of the Cee Baily lens (I had one) but I have seen a lens get broken even with the CB guard in place. It is probably fine for street use but maybe not as much protection as possible on rocky trails.

I have the TT unit now. More distance between the guard and lens but even that may not be enough. At least I can rationalize the cost that way :lol3

Would you mind posting a picture of the damage - so we can see how it occured and potentially helping in selecting a good headlight protector.

I bought a piece of lexan 18x24 inches for about 7 dollars.Looks like i can make 5 of those with it.I cut the first one with my jigsaw clamped upside down in a vise, then cleaned it up using my dremel tool sander.Attached it to the light with some dual-lock and a zip-tie to oil cooler rail.Ed

Jim - any issues with light dispersement?

Looks easy to clean with the velcro.

I was thinking of the BMW lexan cover, worth it?

No, none at all. It was like it didn't exist. Pop it off and clean it, pop it back on.

In the sink at the hotel after thirteen straight days on the road.

I also had an HID for a lot of the miles with no issues.
