Well people, I have done all that I'm going to do to the XR for now. Time to enjoy it. Linky...... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=22571133&postcount=246
Well I didn't get a whole lot done today. I did get the wheels trued and I cleaned and greased two sets of suspension linkages. I have ANOTHER plated XR behind this black one to build. I assembled the forks, new seals and oil. I hit the brick wall when I was going to install the triple trees. The lower steering bearing race was all notched up so I cut it out and ordered a new set of steering bearings. The bearings are supposed to arrive Tuesday. I took the spring off of the shock and cleaned the parts.
Has anyone tried a oil cooler from an 400ex atv? they seem to be pretty plentiful and i would guess do a good job....
Was wondering about your tank refurbishing? (this could be a double post - my original disappeared). I've tried heat gun and paint with no success... Mine is an 86, red.
The tank had really bad sun damage to it as can be seen in the "before" pics. What I did was to rub it back using a really coarse steel wool scourer, and progressively use finer steel wool until I was happy with the result. It is best if you have water running over it as you are scouring the tank, it stops the steel wool from clogging. I did the front fender too, but ended up using a different one. HTH
Calling all XR600 Gurus.. My 88 XR600 had a heat seizure, and needs a rebore. It is a Nikasil cylinder. I have been advised to just re-sleeve it with cast iron and go riding. I kinda like the idea of keeping it a Nikasil sleeve. Can it be rebored and then re-Nikasil coated to increase the bore? If I go for a cast iron sleeve, what piston and rings to use? How much benefit from reboring anyway?
I would imagine that you can bore your cylinder to what ever size you want up to 100mm and then get it re-coated. As far as what piston to use, any will work. The piston doesn't care if it's an iron or Nikasil cylinder. If you want to stick with the Nikasil purchase the piston and send it with the cylinder so that the cylinder is sized correctly.
What gears are recommended for use on the street? I have seen some replys about NX650 dominator 2nd and 5th gears and then again from the 650L.. whats the difference between them?
Over here the XR600 comes with 14/48 and the XR650l has 15/45. The NX650 second gear swap closes up the first to second gap and places it to the second to third where it's not felt as much. The NX650 fifth gear is like an overdrive fifth. Lowers the engine RPM at crusing speed. The transmission main shaft has different tooth count between the XR and XRL.
Royal club, I'm running a 14/40 combo that's alright for cruising at up to 60mph/100kmh and still okay for tighter stuff. If I was to go again I'd probably do 42 or 43 rear and 15 front for a slightly higher overall ratio and the option to go down to a 14 for pure trail riding. Cheers - boingk
This I need, and want. Im using 14/43 now and its fun on twisty roads, but runs out of breath on the highway. Do you also happen to know that the internals are on a FMX650?
I did the 14/40 once, didnt like it very much, so went to 43, which made riding it in 5th pretty awefull. I keep thinking I have another gear left..
I'm currently running a 15/42 combo (that's what I had) Good on the road cruising, plenty left after 100Kmh, but would be way too tall for off-road twistys.
My friends 1986 XR600R seems to be missing any tabs to drive the speedometer gearbox. The old box was seized and I was going to mount a drive box off my xr650r to drive a xr650L speedometer. However when I removed the drive box I can't see any way the box is driven. Any ideas? Could the seized box have damaged it? The bike is a bit of a bitsa but I'm betting the front hub is original from the amount of rust and crap on it plus the small front axle/bearings.
Yeah, I've run a 15/40 combo and it was really tall... cruising in 4th saw an easy 90kmh but shift to 5th and it didn't want to sit happily under about 120kmh or so. Overgeared. The 14/40 at the moment isn't bad and will take you down to a slow jog in 1st without juddering or stalling but 14/43 would probably be better for offroad and 15/43 better for a mix of onroad and off. - boingk
If you look at the right side of the hub you should see notches around the axle hole. This is where the drive plate should rest and this plate is what drives the Odo assy. Look at a Honda parts fich to see what's missing.
