I have an ancient monochrome SP and occasssionally use it in my van.
Sometimes, (not everytime) it will stall at the "acquirering satelites" screen
for no logical reason. Clear skies, no large buildings around, low humidity etc.
I'm thinking the tinted windshield of my sprinter van may be the culprit, but
I'm not sure. Sometimes the sat reception on the bike is slow in similar conditions.

    My question is this:

Would it be cost effective to purchase an amplified antenna?

I can get one at northstar gps for $20 + $5 shipping

I have an external antenna on my 2720, and it really does improve accuracy, due to the internal patch antenna coupled with the design of my mount.

Given the external antenna, I wouldn't be suprised if it's a receiver issue and not the antenna. I have no clue what Garmin would charge to take a look at it, but I would be the cost to repair would be close to what it's worth :dunno
