No-Stop Redux

    I pulled this from the World Round thread so that we didn't corrupt it with a bunch of argument about no-stop. :D

    "How did you all that attended the event find the no-stop style? How did it compare to the 08 round? is Dynamic the word you are walking away with"

    No-stop has certainly received plenty of attention over the winter. I was in the "wait and see" camp rather than expressing a strong opinion either way. After watching the World Round in TN last weekend, I'm still somewhat torn.

    On the plus side, there was action. There was no waiting while riders stared down an obstacle for 20 seconds. It kept things moving and kept things exciting. It may be coincidence, but it seems like maybe it is evening things up just a little at the top as well. I don't follow World Trials very closely, but the general consensus from the folks I chatted with was that it's a little bit of a shocker for Bou to not have won 3 of 4 rounds so far this year.

    The big negative is the checking. I saw plenty of inconsistency and in my opinion it just didn't work well. Not to say the checkers were bad (I know it's a tough gig) but that it's just really difficult to get every call right. Particularly when hopping seems to count as motion as it did at this event. The season is young and this is new stuff to many of the checkers and most of the riders. Maybe it will improve?

    `I was speaking to a very well versed and connected individual in the North American trials community recently. He knows everyone that is anyone and has decades of Trials involvement. This individual thinks the No-Stop rule change in Britain is a political move to try and disadvantage, or at least even the playing field, against the mainland Europeans in top level competition. Supposedly the last set of rule changes had a similar hidden agenda, and it's happening again.`
    This was a quote from a british forum. Very interesting to see if it pans out. When the FIM let the all day dab rule exist, the reasons were for telivised broadcasts. At the same time it allowed certain riders a chance to stay close in points in case the better rider made a complete failure. This is the reason the rule is flawed.

    Totally agree with this statement. It seems to compound an already "grey" area when it comes to scoring(i.e. what a rider did or didn't do; or what a checker did or didn't see.) I liked the continuous action but am on the side of minimizing the "up for interpretation" scoring. :dunno IMHO.

    I volunteered to check a section and I will say without reservation I hate no stop even more than I did before.
    Friday night the FIM official talked about what is a stop or is not and I was even more confused after hearing, “A pause is allowed but a stop is not” “Use your own judgment for what you think a stop is” “of course they need to stop when they land on top of something” These are all direct quotes from the FIM official. FIM made a rule, made a video about it and then told us something else.
    This is a quote from one of the Saturday checkers that is a friend of mine. “How can you give a 5 for a pause after they have just ridden an impossibly large off angle rock with no run up”?
    As for the riders there were halfhearted attempts because of not being able to set up for obstacles. The drama of watching someone take 20 seconds to set up for something over there head was gone. There were 2 or 3 riders that truly embraced the no stop rule. None of the top 5 were the riders the truly embraced it.
    I hate myself for not giving 5’s to every rider who paused even a moment.
    I LOVE trials but will sell my bikes before I ever ride a no stop event. If I wanted to ride no stop I would get a vintage bike spend 3 times the money of a used modern bike to make the vintage bike ride modern and then go ride vintage events.
    I did not think I could like no stop more than I did before this event. I was wrong.
    Please, FIM make rules that can be followed by both checkers and riders.

    Yes, the rules and how they are interpreted need some time and tweaking. I was lucky and had a very exciting section. It only took 25-30 seconds to ride. On the flip side, if this was still stop and hop it would have been a section maxed out on time.
    Would the section been more enjoyable to watch with each rider balancing for another minute? Probably not. With the bottleneck and the confusion in the corridor causing more time issues! It was not too hard to score as it was just rideable enough as set. Just a few cleans, 2`s and 3`s for most riders with almost 1/3 of the riders getting fives including all three lines.
    I found it enjoyable without the boredom of the riders dragging the bikes all the way through the section. We got to watch riders ride! Not pushers struggle.

    My son found a video of the `08 world round on you tube. It had Bou riding the same rocks(in our section) and easily cleaning the section. Funny the bike with the Repsol colors looked the same! In our case it was harder as set with the current rules!

    We use no stop rules in our twinshock trials, that's how I learned to ride trials 30 years ago and anything else feels like cheating. I observed at a National round a couple of years ago and found it very hard to not give someone a 5 when they just stood there with one foot down for ages.

    As a spectator, I liked the no-stop style. The riders actually "rode" their bikes rather than just bouncing them. There was little waiting time.
    Seemed to me the checkers were enforcing the "spirit" of no-stop rather than the "legal" rule. I liked it. Sunday was a better spectator day because of the increased difficulty.

    All I know is right now with what I have seen I don't like it, maybe a small tweak or two and given more time the observers will do better and the scoring will be better.

    This used to be a five in our club and I wish they would bring that back. It's fine to stop, as long as your feet are on the pegs.

    Yeah, now I remember who you are! Bring back hopping with out the all day dab, with a very tight time limit. ( Still subjective) Say 2 yards for every second.

    The actual reason for returning to no stop in the UK, is to try and increase interest in modern trials, which is much reduced here (thats not forum chatter, but from a senior member of the ACU).

    WTC trials has returned to no stop for pretty much the same reason, and this is something that was forced on FIM by the factories, who threatened to boycott WTC events and organise their own series, if no stop was not introduced (again from a senior member of the ACU).

    I get the feeling the real reason for modern trials becoming less and less popular around the world, is that its a sport which is becoming increasingly specialised, with no bikes being made suitable for beginners, and an ever greater requirement for acrobatics at higher levels of competition (which are a little remote to many riders).

    I enjoyed the no stop, the flow was much improved over stop and hop. Although I would hate to have been a checker. It was hardly enforced Sunday on the sections I watched. ( not critize checkers- a tough call to make) .
    I wonder if technology could solve the checking issue ie a motion sensor on bike that detects the stop then triggers a light ( or a speaker that gives a loud wahwahwaaaah sound , :D)
