I have a Garmin Quest II that I used a few years ago on mainland trips and I like it. Just started thinking about planning another trip, plug the Quest into the computor - Garmin tells me that I have to update the Maps on the Quest - I do - Now the maps on the thing are shitty - only paved/main roads, no jeep trails or smaller stuff, and it will no longer do "routing" ( I can download routes from mapsorce). Last time I used the thing it had the same detail that is on Mapsource.... What the hell? will the thing still work for off road? Re routing while on a trip doesnt' look doable.... WTF?
Well, the big question is what maps were you using and what maps did you update to? You can find out what maps are currently on the device by going to the map page, going through the menu, and finding a menu option that says map info. I wasn't aware that the quest would actually support the newer NT maps? Do you still have the old maps saved on the PC? You can always push them back to the GPS. It's not that hard.
Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll actually have to do some research and extra work.... Why the hell does Garmin fuck w/ people so? I have the old routes that I created a few years ago on the old maps on my computor - never saved "just the maps". Wife bought me a 78cs for my boating adventures - don't really want to fork out the extra cash for the land chip for that thing ... Thanks, JP
They are really something, I know I would want to stay on the phone and give you all the help possible.
hmm I have a 78cx and would be interested too...I too use it for sailing and now riding... sorry for the hijack christian
Do yourself a favor and buy CityNavigator (DVD, $80) and load it to the 78. You will have the ability to switch between maps on the unit, do trip planning in MapSource or BaseCamp and navigate with a up-to-date GPS. Or look into some of the open-source maps. Unless you have the original map setup CD/DVD I would not waste an unlock on a Quest ll. Bruce
Just curious jpkailua, did Garmin get money out of you for this new map set for an unlock code? I'm wondering what mapset code they sold you if they did? I do agree that the Quest II is getting pretty outdated although it still might come in handy for off road trips.
Lucky for you Kailua is not very large and a decent map will do just fine. If you get lost keep going in one direction until you hit a road or get to the water.
No. No extra costs. When I bought the thing about 5 years ago it came with an unlock code and everthing. I was really quite happy on how things were going. Updated the maps - via garmin w/ an outo prompt about 3 years ago - maps were fine, same roads/trails as map source - no charge - updated yesterday and am not too happy... Not too handy for offroad trips if'n it don't have any of the "off road/dirt stuff" on it.... I do like the small size and got very used to it's menu's.
Yep, if I get lost around here i just head to the beach and turn right, or, left. Sooner or later I'll get right back to where I started..... I've shipped my bike to the mainland a few times and done some fairly extensive (for me) 3 week trips w/alot of offroad. Not having local knowledge and no prior experience with the locations I was in I tended to rely pretty heavily on the little Quest and my pre planned - dreamed up - routes.
Well, unless you have the lifetime updates, Garmin usually doesn't just hand over free map updates. Are you sure that you didn't just update "MapSource", which is the GUI part of the map and now it looks different then what you were running before? You can open MapSource -> Help -> about and see what version of the gui you are running. I have version 6.16.2, but a lot of people have chosen to stay with version 6.13.7 or older as they made some major updates to the way the maps looked after that version. Again, this does not actually affect the maps and how they work, just changed the way they look and react on the screen. Do you have it set to "highest" detail to see all the small roads? If its set to high or lower, many of the small roads don't show. In the dropdown box, what maps sets show in that menu? I have City Navigator 2011.2 maps and they still have a lot of small detail dirt roads on them. The only thing that really doesn't show in later map updates are the small rivers and creeks. Roads & Rec and Metroguide did a much better job at that. Also verify for routing that under Edit -> Preferences -> Routing, you have Auto Routing enabled and not direct Routing.
Jerry, the OPer is in Hawaii and referenced the "mainland". also for the post from El Salvador I did include a reference to open-source maps. All in the same post....Just say'n Bruce
It seems that the Quest 2 won't download maps directly. Called Garmin this morning - on the phone for about 45 mins w/a guy that took over my computor. A simple fix - the maps are downloaded to my mapsource and then areas/states that I select can be "transfered to my device" The process has been a PITA, but the Garmin support people were very help full and professional.
Glad you got it worked out. With most older Garmin units, this is how you update the maps on the unit going directly from MapSource to send the maps you want on the unit.
Been there, done that! Very spacey having someone in another state takeover your computer. Let Garmin CS explain the fix for 15 min or release the computer to them and they do it in 1 min. Bruce
No, sorry, I haven't. Right now my bike is here in Hawaii, I may try to ship my bike to the Mainland for a ride this May. (no, no pun) I start in San Diego, and then ride around and wind up in Minden. My brother, Steve, lives in Genoa, NV. He rides a GS 1200 that he has made a bit more dirt worthy (21"/18" tires, lightened the exhaust, uses Wolfman soft bags...). Please direct me to your "Invite" rides so that I can stear my brother your way. He has done a few trips w/ me, is an extreamly competant rider, (I can't keep up w/ him...) and needs to tke some time off of work. (owns his own business) Thanks for any and all links. JP
