Let's see some pictures of your Pelican Topbox setup, including mounts. Interested in making something for my bike in the near future and want to see what everyone else is using.
I'm going with one of these for my topbox. Got it for $52 shipped with the pick-n-pluck foam included. Can get it for about $16 less if you don't want the foam. Deepest one that would match the size of my top plate. Wanted the depth for pillion backrest. From what I've read, they are not as strong as pelican, but probably won't take too much of an impact up there. I'm in trouble if it does! :eek1 Will get here Mon/Tues next week. Will try to post pics next weekend.
Stormcase iM2100 on my XChallenge. I mounted it to the rear rack. I prefer the Stormcase latches to the Pelican latches.
I really like that mounting system. Did you buy it, or did you make it? If you bought it where? If you made it, can you tell me out of what, and do you have any additional pictures. Thanks.
No. That was just on the plate that I had bought prior to this set up. I have this to carry my camera on photo excursions. And it my laptop fits in it for commuting to client meetings. If I venture forth with the fly rod, then I don't take it and have a Wolfman duffle and pannier bags.
Took awhile to find the pieces parts. But I made it out of stock used for routing tables etc. It's called miter-t-track. I bought it off of amazon. http://www.amazon.com/ALUMINUM-MITER-T-TRACK-Peachtree-Woodworking/dp/B000KV14PY I used T-nuts inside the case to mount the bars. The hardest part is getting everything parallel as the tolerances are pretty darn tight. It does not rattle and takes a bit of push/pull to mount. I wanted something I could quickly undo and take the whole thing in with me to a restaurant or client meeting. Works well so far.
nothing fancy hear, got this box at work. It was a test instrument case. The test set was defective so the boss let me have the case. Its small but holds stuff I need for off roading. It bolts right to the Tiger luggage rack. simple and cheap: How much crap can I stick on the back of my bike?
Ironhorse- Thanks for the information re the mitre t-rak stock. I will look into it. Your top-box set-up is pretty slick.
Here's how I used the miter t-track to secure mine: Top box: Seahorse 540SE The BMW roundels are things I picked up off fleabay: Inside the box. Gonna put a sheet of lexan or light alum to sit on top of the knobs. Bolts protruding through the bottom and the top plate: Slide the mitre track onto the bolt heads (3/8" bolts): Covers 2 bolts on each side. Tighten the knobs and it clamps it to the top plate! Size of the box: Got the tall one to increase the backrest size for the pillion. Will make an easy-to-install pad to affix to the case to make it more comfy. Also gonna add anchor points to the top to strap some more gear to (although I am not sure I want to go taller than where I'm at).
Someone requested me to post some pics of my setup didn't know there was a tread for this. I'll post pics and some description if anyone has questions or wants to know more ask away sorry some of the pics are a bit blury dunno what was goin on with me camera. I wanted to be able to carry fuel and water on our Baja trip last year and have a top case. This is what i came up with. I used a pelican 1500 case it was the perfect size for me and my stuff/needs. I didn't want one too big. the more space ya have the more ya carry which is not always the best thing The cargo plate I made my self got some ideas from other pics and members on here. The aluminum was easy to work with. I cut it out/up with a jigsaw. I wanted to be able use it as a cargo rack with a net when the box wasn't on. It mounts onto the dakar rear handles holes. Take out the stock bolts and get longer ones preferably stainless (unlike mine) and be sure to put thread lock! this came loose on me in baja! sucks taking everything off to tighten it up in the middle of the desert!!! Mounted it on like this, four round head bolts (for security) and wing nuts & fender washers inside. Drilled a line of holes in cargo rack to be able to move the set up back or forward depending on riding solo or two up forward back I had no idea how I was gonna mount the rotopax before they came. I was gonna put em on the back of the panniers or on top of the top case (would loose my net easy access cargo space) but wasn't too keen on either. When they came I just offered them up to a few spots on the bike and they just seemed to fit nice and tidy along each side of the top box and were able to hang over the cargo rack. This wasn't planned . If the cargo rack had a been wider it wouldn't have worked. There was a smile on my face that evening + they don't interfere with opening the box. It is fairly easy to take it on and off. I wanted to be able to do this for night time and such. the whole setup comes off in one piece and you can carry it by the handle on the pelican case I added some net hold downs on the top of the box this came in very handy when we were doin desert riding and had to take off my road jacket. Doesn't look great without the rotopax cans on it. I figure I will buy a second case for trips I won't need to carry extra water fuel. You could put the rotopax mounts on with wing nuts as well but ur case wouldn't be water tight then, so I just figured on buying an extra case to pop on for weekend trips. Here it is in action:
