I saw some bikes at moa with flat square mounted fuel tanks, mostly gs bikes. I didn't think it would ever be something I could use, till on my way home and riding against the wind and pulling a trailer, I miss calculated my fuel milage and fuel stops and ended up on side of road 6 mile from gas station.. any recomendations? I think id want st least a gallon, and mount it on my trailer,, those flat one would work, I think anybody know the brand?

Rotopax is what you're looking for.

+1 on this. You want Rotopax not the Kolpin's

I personally think that the rotopax are overprice and more of just a fancy farkle. By the time you get the can, the mount you could have bought a larger tank (almost for my bike at least).

The "MSR" 22oz fuel bottles people use are also silly, though I have carried one and used one; just too small. It might have got you that six miles though.

Personally I think the best solution is a bigger tank.

And if I do need to carry extra fuel I use a high quality screw top "juice" bottle. I have a gallon size one that I store "bad gas" in my shed. Been there for 2 years, does not leak liquid or vapors. I keep it around to use a solvent for real nasty stuff.

look at his bikes. He'd have a hard time finding a bigger tank for 10x the price of a rotopax.

Look at the 1.75 gal Rotopax, good size to fit on GS luggage grid.

I have both rotopax and kolpin. My kolpin just survived the CDR mounted on my pannier of our sidecar rig. It is my understanding that kolpin is currently NOT selling their product due to some sort of EPA fight.

Have a Kolpin and like it. The size and capacity of the Kolpin was better for me than the Rotopax.

I use a kolpin too. Some have reported leaks, but mine has been trouble free and leak free for 4000 ish km now mounted flat on its side on the back of my husky.

Well, so maybe things have changed for Kolpin then.

If you miscalculate your fuel mileage and stops like UncleBudinTX explained, you can have the biggest tank and still end up at the side of the road.

Take a cheap container and see how it develops when you fall (burst container and sparks from the sliding bike...:huh)

Rotopax may be overpriced, but they are solid and you have good attachments. Don't know about the Kolpin.

I have a 30oz MSR fuel bottle, that fits in my tool tube, that I carry on long highway rides for emergency fuel. I carry two of them if I am going somewhere remote.

I'm looking into adapting this marine fuel tank. It's an Attwood 3gal. You can get them with or without a gauge. Kinda big, but flat bottomed with notched sides for securing straps. The fuel tap is on the top, but that means no holes on the bottom to leak.

    Measures 16 5/8"L x 11 1/2"W x 7"H

Saw a couple of riders coming down from the bush near Boulder, one had a WalMart 1g plastic fuel can strapped to the tail, the other had TWO of them, and a Stihl chainsaw.

Walmart, yeah. Or Tractor Supply, whatever. Red.
