Personally, I'm not such a big fan of the Dakar Rally. In fact when it was paraded through some of the world's poorest countries I thought it was kind of obscene.

Whatever. I guess it makes for some interesting photo opportunities...

On the contrary my friend, the Dakar is one of the best ways to let people know about these distressed places.

There's a bunch of foundations set up by the race promoters in the eighties that raise and donate tons of money for wells, housing, schools and infrastructure, and sustainable skills, most based in Africa and still running despite the race no longer being held there.
The Rally4life team raised $4 million for such foundations.
