Thanks for the info. I will try it. I can buy an IMS tank, and 300 shrouds easily. I don't want the hassle of all the 'tweaking' with the Acerbis Exxon Valdez tank. I had a Clarke for a week and got frustrated and sold it. I wasn't impressed with the fit and I didn't care for distorting my seat pan.

I put the Acerbis 3.7 tank on my 2010... there was VERY little issue in making it fit. I took one wiring harness off the frame tab that held it and pushed it down and that was it. It fit just fine. Oh and I trimmed the choke knob to clear the petcock.

There is no tweaking with the Acerbis tank on the '06/'07. It's a direct fit...no saddle modding. Whether you like that tank or not, that's another issue, but the tank bolts directly to the older models. Make sure you can find the older 300 shrouds used somewhere as they're around $100 from Kawasaki...if they're still available new.

No, it's not attractive. But I thought it needed a lot of fiddling with...including shortening the choke lever. That's what steered me away from it more than the looks. I have easy access to Acerbis and IMS as I work in the industry.

But if it's a bolt-on deal with no messing around, I'd take a look at that.

New throttle tube and grips. Clean air filter and left the top off. Felt like a totally different bike. I knew I was jetted rich anyway so it cleaned it up. Alittle bit drone sounding so I don't think I will keep it off. I do some water crossings also. So looks like I'll go back down a jet size. I just did a 45 mile loop around willoubhy lake

Well I have joined the club.... I wanted a light, low maintenance, affordable bike and decided to give a KLX a try when I found this very clean 2007 for a great price. So far I really like it. Thanks for all the reading material in this thread that steered me in this direction. I am sure I will need some advice soon.

It had 1700 miles but I put 200 or so on today during it's maiden voyage with me aboard. It has a few scratches but overall looks pretty much brand new. the KLX will need some new tires asap for dirt duty but other than that it needs nothing. Everything is bone stock.

No everything of any real size is South or East by an hour or so from Akron. You should check out the NEOhioADV thread in the Central forum for some rides (I think there were 2 happening this weekend) and ideas since I don't recall seeing you being too active on that thread. Yes, fair method of diagnosis, but keep it "temporary" as Lutz suggests. Krieger gives a very good explanation of why this method puts too much tension on the cam chain and can be damaging.

I do and it kind of bugs me whenever I see anything about "manually adjusting" a supposedly automatic tensioner. All I can think of is would you tighten your drive chain up tight? No, you don't. You don't because you do not want it too tight when the swingarm swings to the point where the axle, swingarm pivot, and countershaft are all in line, the tightest point. The same is true for a cam drive. You do not want the chain to run too tight, because it can pull the cams against the plain bearing surface of the head, not good.

It's not about making an engine quiet, it's about having the cam drive work right without damaging anything. The noise is a symptom telliing you something is wrong. The fix isn't to make it quiet, the fix is to make the cam drive free of slack without overtightening the chain. My explanation is on my web site as well, with illustrations of what to look for on the tensioner to prove the failure. It isn't catastrophic, unless you let it go for too long. But by then the noise should be driving you crazy.

I hope this helps anyone with cam drive noise, which apparently starts with noise around 5000-6000 rpm and gets worse. On other bikes, 4 cylinders, it may be at idle and just above,
