Hi guys. Just a heads up: as many of you may already know, the Carson National Forest in northern NM is currently on stage 3 fire restrictions which means no access unless you're a local. This affects the CDR from Abiquiu north to the state line. Read all about it here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/news/...strictions.pdf

I'm set to leave in 3 weeks for this trip so I'm crossing my fingers for rain in the next couple weeks but I don't know how likely it is that they'll open it up by the time I get there.

Also, Santa Fe National Forest is under stage 3 fire restrictions. This affects the portion of the CDR from Abiquiu to Cuba.

Went with Mapsource US TOPO 100K, latest version, $79, eBay. Thanks for the suggestion on the R&R!

"Roads and Recreation" is the name of the map books by Benchmark. If you Google this, one of the links will be a list of several suppliers with their prices. I bought several states about 2 years ago for about $22 ea. If you belong to AAA they sell them for ~$14, but your local office may only have your state.

I copy the pages I need for a trip and highlight my intended route. Works great in conjunction with my 60 GPS with the tracks loaded.

I also try to save the pages and reuse them on future trips to save on copying time and ink cartriges.

Don't worry

I rode the entire CDT using a zumo and City Navigator. No problems. I did spend some time checking and comparing routes but it helped make me familiar with the route and never really doubted where I was.

Roads and Recreation may be the name of a series of Benchmark maps, but the Roads and Recreation I was referring to is a Garmin software product used on computers and GPS units. It was discontinued many years ago. It is still very useful for offroad riding. The maps are, I believe, the same maps as U.S. Topo maps still being sold by Garmin without the topo lines. I have used both and the topo lines are confusing to me. They clutter up things especially on the small screen of a GPS unit.

Understood. I looked for an old copy of the Garmin Mapsource R&R on eBay and couldn't find anything. I see that Garmin discontinued it in 2004. In a bit of a time crunch, I just went with 100K topo maps for the US. I too find the topo lines useless on the little 60cx screen, and they do muttle things. Would be nice if they were on a layer you could turn off! We will see. Needed to make a call. Hope they work out.

Guess I could keep an eye out for a copy of the R&R and score it too if I can get it in time.

Thanks for your comments,

-David

I just got this message from a CDR rider headed north:

"The road between Grants and Cuba is washed out. No way around, over or through.
The washout is just a few miles past Fernandez ranch. On Cannonshot's tracks he has it marked "wash". Last year there was a wash there but it was doable. This year it's impassable.
We've had rain the last few days in NM and mud has gotten the better of me a few times."

Myself and two buddies are leaving Wednesday for NM to start the CDT. Are the fire restrictions still in effect? We are planning on starting at the Mexico border this Sunday. Thanks!!

Here is the official website for what you need http://nmfireinfo.wordpress.com/. I am also doing this trail in less than 2 weeks and hoping that the fire restrictions are eased somewhat. Have fun and update if you can!
