G'day Davo,
When you have to start work at 5am it's hard to sleep in on the weekends.
It's gives ya the shits at rallies,I'm often up and packed before the sun comes up and waiting for every other bastard to wake up.

Started getting the bike ready for next weekend and beyond, fresh oil, new did xring chain and sprockets. Went for a ride and dropped it at low speed on the bitumen - a few scratches (minor and only cosmetic) and bent the handle bars slightly - just enough to be annoying but not enough to justify immediate replacement. Oh well

Crikey that's dedication. I roused the mighty Freewind from it's 3 month slumber last night and decided to do a reccy to Moonan Flat this morning. Mainly because I couldn't remember how long it took to get there but also to show the boss what all this back road riding fuss is about.

Best laid plans and all that, first I couldn't remember where to pick up the Gostwyck Rd and turned too early, 1/2 an hour later we were on the right track. So I take it steady since I've been on a bloody mountain bike for the last three months and the Freewind and I need to get reaquainted, plus I've never actually done much gravel two up.

We take the back way to Walcha then on to Niangla where the weather starts to get really nice. The air is cool, we're cruising along in the shade of the trees, life is good. Down the back track to Hanging Rock/Sheba Dams and we're caught in the dust from a vehicle in front of us. In the still air between the trees the dust is really thick. At the same time we ride into a nearly solid wall of heat. The boss is less than impressed by now.

Into Nundle for lunch instead of Moonan Flat like I'd anticipated. I guess the 10:30am departure time didn't help here but sometimes it's hard to get motivated on a weekend! The heat is pretty bad and I can tell Moonan via Timor is out since we didn't get to Nundle until 2pm. A run back up the tar is called for here.

As we head for Tamworth it just gets hotter and hotter. Whenever I think it can't get any hotter we ride into another wall of heat. It's the hottest I've ever ridden in and my mesh jacket starts to work against me letting the searing hot wind in to make me feel even worse. I can just about feel the knobbies disintegrating beneath us. I start to pray for rain.

Coming into Uralla my prayers are answered, even if I'd had the liner there would be no stopping to put it in. I've never been so glad to ride in the rain in all my life. It's patchy at first but near home it's much heavier, we ride an extra 10km just so we can get wetter.

It would have been the perfect ending to the ride but when we get home I discover that since I didn't close the zips of my pockets I've got two pockets full of rainwater. My mobile phone apparently didn't need any cooling off and may never speak to me again

P.S Sorry to hear about the bike Davo. My bars have been bent for yonks now, you get used to it
