BMW has used those for how many decades?

Nope. Not like these.

The Stelvio uses the Alpina wheel design.

Alpinas have spokes in the traditional center drop section of the rim, but with a patented o-ring design to keep them sealed.

Very popular in the SuperMoto world. http://alpinawheelsusa.com/

Guzzi Californias used a design similar to BMW's with the spokes at the outside of the rim from 1998 through 2005.

That was a late July ride in 2012. It NEVER rains much in Omak WA in July, except last summer. the day before was totally beautiful, sunny and hot. This storm came out of nowhere.
We were scouting out projects for a Mission trip that happened the following week.

Probably the same rainstorm...... Coming down off Hwy 20, Liberty Bell in the background. Started raining in Concrete, got hailed on at Washington Pass. Painful, even through the Roadcrafter. Rained all the way to Chelan. ugh.

Anyways, spouse has his 2004 Cali EV, my 98 V11 EV is behind his. We stopped for a quick break and a GS stopped behind us. Turned out to be DrunkinMaster on his Freedom Ride.

My EV:

His EV and my baby Breva behind it:
