Other than the elimination of the desmogger and the crankcase breather air cleaner the actual airbox LOOKS stock to me, and unmolested at that. The two holes in the top of the airbox are stock, just like the pic in 5-9 of the manual. So I just drill out those rivets and call it good? I've heard of the desnorkling mod but have never seen it detailed anywhere. Also, page 1-7 of the manual shows the compression spec to be 92psi at 400rpm. Can you help me on where you got 160-170? jasonkop screwed with this post 03-12-2010 at 06:04 AM |

Yup,,drill out the two rivets,,pull the snorkle out.... As for the compression,it`s like i said,if you screw in the compression tester, open the throttle, and crank the engine over you should see arround 90 lbs of compression... But as per the manual,,,if you back off the right side exhaust valve adjustment to at least 0.82 clearance you see the actual engine compression without the decompressor in effect, lowering the reading.... See page 3-9 You do not have the decompressor??????????...if that`s true you just have to do a normal compression test, open the throttle, crank the engine. Now the manual says you should have 199 lbs of compression, since the decomp is not affecting the compression, because you do not have one... But........getting almost 200 lbs compression is sometimes hard to get, because rpm is hard to keep up with the small starter....and you are allowed a max difference of 25% in most engines of spec.. What this means is that if spec is 200 psi at 400 rpm..you are allowed as low as 150lbs.......any lower is considered a problem....leaking rings,valves,etc.... This 25% rule is a standard,in actuallity you should get at least 170 or better....... I f you have a high comp piston this goes out the window, you will see higher readings...just do the compression test and post the results..the aftermarket cam could affect your readings too,,but not much IMHO... Your readings would have to be awfull low to make it run the way you descibe though...... Brian

Carb Mods
Jason,
From Dave's Mods: Important Note: These XR650L carburetor modifications work in conjunction with a free-flowing aftermarket style air filter and removed airbox snorkel. These mods might actually make your bike run worse without replacing the air filter and pulling the snorkel.
