I think these are dust seals, the sealing is via the tight fit between the throttle shaft and the carb. body like every other carb. I've seen ( Holly, Rottchester, Carter, Dellorto, etc. )

you are right, the seeals that came are dust seals. They dont contact the shaft well enough to discourage whatever air leaks past the worn shaft.

Not mad just jealous! I think I've narrowed down my intermittent power loss/bike shutting off.

Now on to removing the top end...tonight!

Thank you. Yes, I've been on Craig's list as well as Cycle Trader.com. Drove 300 miles yesterday and looked at 2. One was really beat (imho) for only 5000 miles and the other turned down what I felt was a fair offer. Have had little luck with dealers getting back to me. Had one tell me 3 times they would call me back and never did. (Later spoke with the owner and explained, lol.) Anyway, I want very very clean or an awesome deal on new if anyone knows of one.

Well hopefully that corrosive lack of connection with the spark plug wire and boot will be the root cause.

The top end needs to be pulled because there is a loud ticking coming from what I suspect is the exhaust valve or in that area. It increases with idle. Also, when I kill the motor you can hear what sounds like a broken piece of metal flopping around then coming to a stop. The sound is consistent after numerous starts/kill cycles.

Top End

Ruben,

You do know that the rocker cover and the entire top end can be removed with the engine in the bike.

Yeah you know.

Pull the rocker cover for a little look-see.

You might check the valve adjustment B4 pulling the cover. Miss adjustment of the throttle side exhaust valve is very common. This is because during valve adjustment, the engine is not rotated far enough, just past TDC, to allow the decompression cam top drop out.

Yeah I gathered that from the design and the Haynes manual. When I removed the ignition coil yesterday I almost pulled the trigger on the rocker covers but didn't want to open a can of worms when I was completing "stage 1" of my investigation.
