On my end, where I like to go, what I like to do, pretty sure a 950 or 990 could not even get there. Best trail is tight woods, hilly, plenty of rocks, no trail. (I had a ton of that in CT, tougher to find where I am now). Dave

I'm looking to a rebuild on my xr650L motor and I got a couple of questions.
1) I'm going to run a JE high compression piston and I'm wondering what cam and battery setup I should run? Hot cam and 450x battery? stock cam and 450x battery or hot cam and stock battery. Mostly I'm worried about starting. Right now I'm running a 450x battery with a stock motor and it struggles starting when cold. Also when I rebuild my engine should I replace the cam chain and tensioner? The motor has ruffly 25,000miles on it? Thanks |

Engine Work
Captain,
I'll chime in here with my recommendations. First off is the battery in the stock location or not. If it is and you need more Omph out of the battery get one for a KTM 950. It is the same overall size just a little taller so you have to trim the battery keeper strap some. I put one in my son's built XRL and the battery works GREAT. Next, I wouldn't use a Hot Cam if you paid me. Yes, I don't like them. Some folks have had good results with them and others haven't. Just ask Prince Ruben of this thread. A fresh top end and at 700 miles his new Hot Cam took a shit and killed the rockers. A pricey repair at best. My normal build and I've done a few is a 102.4 piston and a Mega Cycle cam with treated rockers. This is a very expensive build. $500.00 in the cam and rockers alone. On my bike that I did last May has the 102.4 piston but I kept the OE cam and the bike runs just fine and the OE battery has no problem getting it started. The bike I am building right now: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=669060 It's getting a JE 102 piston (Thanks Kenny61) and I am keeping the OE cam as I just don't have the $$ for a Mega Cycle cam at this time. I am going to do the KTM battery as I have to buy a battery anyway. My 2 cents...

Yeah that's a lot of money for just a little extra Hp. I already have the hot cam, maybe I'll just sell it. And stick with the OE cam. I'm looking for reliability not a race engine. |
