You could also get a different carb that doesn't have a choke. It's more expensive, but it's more fun too. As far as the short cable/plunger option, look on some car carb websites for manual choke kits, I had one in my Nova and it worked well, and if I remember right changing the cable length required nothing more than a little cutting. The biggest issue is going to be the end of the needle that goes into the carb though and that has me thinking you should get another cable (for "just in case purposes) then cut that cable down very carefully with a dremel cutoff wheel. First the outer shielding then the cable it's self, but the sticking point to that is what will you use to adjust it or grab it after it's cut? I have a lot of bike parts and was thinking that a simple BMX brake lever on the frame in an out of the way spot would be nice but I haven't gotten to the actual fab stage yet. FWIW I was thinking about doing the same thing. When I figure out what I am going to do I'll post it up.

Well I did a little digging in my box o crap and found that the plunger style choke from a klx300 will thread right in to the xrl carb. There is a small difference in the diameter of the needle, I don't think it will matter though. I don't know if this officially works cause my motor is not installed yet.
