So, it seems like I should know the answer here, but since you're going down in jets, because of the longer lift, does it follow that you're going to be actually using less fuel, i.e., better mileage. Perhaps CW can answer.....
I asked him that question. The answer is yes. One of the big reasons you will use less fuel is upping the compression which is probably the single variable which has the creates impact on efficiency. The cam probably helps greatly with volumetric efficiency as well. He said he gets mid 50s with his bike and got 45 with a stocker. My Dave's modded stocker got 42-45 MPG ridden pretty hard. But, what a bonus getting another 7-10 MPG would be. That would greatly increase the bikes range without going to the Acerbis Valdez.

CDI - I don't know what is wrong with it

Hi All

My XRL wouldn't start.
I checked everything and in the end I put a used CDI instead of mine (which is 2 years old)
The bike started imidiatly

I opened the CDI but I see nothing wrong

Any hints ?

It's too hard to tell from the photo, but what you are looking for are any small cracks in the soldier on the contacts. If you find that, remove the old solder and replace with new. You may need a magnifying glass for this. Techforlife has LOTS of experience with this and can probably help more.

Thanks a lot - Barron.

I took magnifing glass and found no cracks in the soldier on the contacts.
I will take it to work, to the electronic lab.

Do you think that Techforlife will agree to take a look at it, and maybe to fix it ?

I think so, PM him, he's pretty good at fixing these things from what I hear.

Yup............PM me i`ll repair it........but if you have an "electronic lab" at work......you can easily resolder the board.......

There is a chance that the CDI is garbage....and resoldering will not help...out of about 50 CDI`s if had sent to me........3 were not repairable..

Failure points

Here`s the MAJOR failure points........there can be others,,but these are the ones to really look at carefully...

The blue spots are the worst by far..

The red are the next worst spots

The yellow spots are the next ones to look at..

Like i said these are the most common......but a really good magnifier is need to find them all.....i just remove all the solder now and do the whole board......

Here`s my repair thread at TT...

Question fifth

BTW: I saw in your signature that you have FMX650 fifth gear.
Why is that ?

(The NX second gear I know why)

Jetting

Maybe Mendo or CW or someone else could weigh in on my question. I rebuilt my engine last year with a JE 102mm piston and since then I have increased my main jet up to a 170 trying to eliminate the slight ping I get on the highway at 55-60 mph. Stock gearing and Daves mods done to the carb. The pinging occurs under a slight load like a heavy head wind or a slight uphill.

I have not checked the plug yet, but I tried a 160, 165, and then the 170 main with a slight improvement I think.

I believe what Mendo was experiencing was a ping at lesser throttle than what I am hearing at the upper range around 3/4 to WOT.

What's your cam specs? Jetting won't eliminate the ping ping by its self.
