Offroad Riders training options

One of my new years resolustions was to become a better offroad rider. I had an experience last year out in the foothills that I think could have been avoided if I was more confident in the saddle. My bike bottomed out going over a small berm, and I dropped it. It took me about 20 minutes to pick the sucker up. BTW, my other resolution is to get in shape, so I can pick up my bike!

So, in the Central/SoCal are, what are my options for a good offroad training course? I searched the archives, and found that the Jimmy Lewis course is an option, but what else is out there?

Jimmy Lewis has a couple of classes coming up just outside Vegas (not that far from Sunny California)...see jimmylewisoffroad.com

BMW has a GS school in Berlin, long way from CA. but its something Im going to do one day. Info is on the BMW site

Beemer has one in Scotland too. That is the one seems like most reasonable price. If you dont mind to fly over there.

I read about it in the FAQ's on the web site, but I dont see it there now, It was under or near the part about taking a factory tour.
but I did a quick search and I found this web site.

I dont think its BMW Owned but it list alot of the same stuff the BMW one did. like picking up a GS, how to check the bike over, and things like that. maybe BMW quit runing it and these folks have taken over. you will see that the instructors are old BMW paris-dakar riders.

Europe is full of these types of classes though, in europe the licencsing (spelling) of a rider is MUCH more complex, They MUST go to these schools to ride higher CC bike. (well in england anyway)

One other thing, while serching I did see a class in CA. look under servces on this site.

Maybe ask your BMW dealer or call the phone number for the factory tour and ask them. they all speak english so just call them if your thinking bout going over.

A great way to get your feet dirty is to take a trials riding course. I think there is a guy southeast of Los Angeles.....Lake Elsinore or Temecula or around there, who offers trials training and off-road basics. I saw it on Bike Week on Speedvision last year.

Trials is unbelievably hard work, but you really get proficient at manuevering your bike using your feet and your COG, all at low speed where you can't get hurt (ok, as badly).

We've taken a course at Trials Training Center in Tennessee, and it was a hoot.

Doc Wong is offering FREE dirt classes, with a section for GS's taught by Cal BMW.

Two classes coming, one in Feb, and one in March both in Hollister.

The BMW off road course is held in Wales. First course is on the 28th of March. BMW have two main courses, level 1 and level 2. Then, there's the ultimate course, only for folks who have done both courses, held at the SAS (the UK Seals equivelant special forces)....

the BMW Enduro school in Germany--which is great fun--is located in Hechlingen. You should be able to find info on it by searching advrider....

the best deal is that you can use your bike or theirs; I used their F650--why derange your own bike? and the whole thing cost me less than $1000 for three days, including bike and accomodations
(which they will organize locally for you--but the small gasthause do not take credit cards).
