Which one of you guys is Evren's brother?
He lived with us here in California for a while.
Just talked with him tonight in the grocery store.

Hello again...

I have heard that the speed limit for motorcycles in turkey is 75km and that there are lots of speed cameras on the roads. Can anyone inform me if the above are true?

I am planing to visit Turkey @ summer so i have to be prepared ;)

Tnx in advance

Hi Stelao,

There are no special limits for motorcycles. Further on, generally the main roads with heavy traffic is monitored so I'd suggest you plan your route accordingly.

Have a nice time in Turkey!

Ok, let me share my experience with you, my neighbor.

Last summer I was told by a police officer (who had pulled me over for doing 111 kmh in a 70kmh zone) that the speed limit for motorcycles is 78 kmh. That means you are not to exceed 78 on any road with a bike.

They are revising the relevant law which clearly dates from decades ago and they will make car and motorcycle max. speeds equal. (maybe they already have?)

Here is what you really have to pay attention to:

In Turkey, like many other places, speeding fines are not a set amount. They increase, well...errr, incrementaly. That means if you are, say 10 percent above the max. allowed speed limit for your vehicle, you have to pay `x` amount of fine, but if you are 25 % above the limit you pay a higer fine such as `x * 2`. If you are 40 % above the limit of your vehicle it is an even higher fine etc. The percentages and fines I am quting here are not accurate, but they are there to give you an idea of how the system works.

But here are some concrete figures: I got caught doing 111 in a 70 zone. Cars that were doing about 120 on the same road with me were being fined 65 lira or something like that because they were allowed to travel with 110 max. I was fined 230 lira (that is about 110 Euros !!!!!!) because I was allowed to travel with no more than 78 so I was waaay over my limit.

That being said, on the multi-lane highways (autobahns) I have never seen speed trap radars and people drive as fast as they like.

It is best to pay attention at the entrance and exits of towns for radars.

Also please note that if you are caught doing 70 in a 50 zone they will still fine you because you are not over the speed limit of your vehicle but you are above the speed limit of the road. However it will be a smaller fine.

Don`t worry too much, in thousands of km`s of motorbike travel in Turkey I only got fined once.

Ok, now you need to help me: I may be travelling on E90 `Egnatia Odos` this summer. Do I have to watch out for radars?

To Strommer

Yes indeed you have to watch for speed cameras, especially before or after tunnels, thosa are usually working.
Sometimes as you go by you will see camera boxes, but some of them dont contain camera, never the less nobody knows for sure, because traffic police tends to move the cameras around in the boxes as they please.
Please bear inmind that wherever there is space to stop you it is very common to use hand radars. if you use a gps then you can download poi for your software, with all the latest position of speed cameras and hand radars (this is user made so no guarranties)
If you want i can send you pm with the download address
