You need to be really careful with gear oil.

Most of them will eat the copper in the charging system stator, which is immersed in the primaries lube. I think redline is ok, but most others are not.

Anyone looking for someplace to ride their Buell this summer, the annual "Buells in the Alps" meet (this one is #4) is happening next month, July 25-27, in Little Switzerland, NC.

Complete meet details here:

This'll give you an idea of the local roads:

Good to know, thanks, went with hd syn 3. Does anybody know if the specs for the buell motor and sportster motor are the same for things like primary chain tension?

They should be identical.

re. gear oil and copper: Is it the sulphur in gear oil that causes problems with copper surfaces?

Theoretically there's no exposed copper on the stator; it's enamel-coated. All I know is quite a few Buell riders that ran gear oil in the primary (Mobil-1 75W-90 in my case) experienced stator failure within a few months after changing to it. Possibly something in the oil breaks down the enamel coating rather than the copper itself.

I've had good results with HD's Formula+, both in the Uly and the S3 that I had before (which is the bike that experienced the stator failure with gear oil).

ERD,

Is that top case large enough to fit a full-size helmet?

Yes. It's a junior top case and it fits two full faces.

EDR, I see you are running aux light on yuor hand gaurds and forks as well as running a gps, did you have to modify the electrical system to handle all the extra juice required or does the stock system handle it fine? Thanks
