This setup got me through three months of travel in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, the maze of the Eastern USA, and across Canada.
Paper maps are ideal for perspective, GPS for general relative location (for comparison to paper maps) and the numbers at the bottom are for route changes onto different secondary highways. ![]() The only place this didn't work was Guatemala, where they don't mark their secondary highways (or their major highways) with numbered designations like you'd find in a map. For Guatemala, I "connected the dots" with cities instead. Typically there would be signs for larger towns, but not always. Knowing a bit o' Spanish to ask for directions helped.

Best pic I have right now. Used scroll charts with iPhone GPS just to be safe. When it rained I pulled the plastic over the phone to be safe.
