I ran maxxis 6006's for a couple thousand miles before I put on the MEFO's - they were VERY loud - the noise was actually my biggest reason for getting rid of them - they were otherwise good tyres.

I'm betting that's the one you're hearing....

MEFO Pics?

I have Maxxis 6006's on both ends and they're driving me nuts. They are *really* loud! Can those with the MEFO's post some pics of their bikes up here. I feel the need to drool.

Maxxis 6006s get a lot less noisy pretty quick riding on south/west Texas pavement and gravel.(about 1000 miles) A belt sander would do the same thing. Of course the rear did not grip in dirt by then either. I don't think the front is particularly loud as it hasn't worn much and is pretty quiet after 2500 miles. The rear is junk at this point.

I ride like a girl and I don't understand how people are getting the mileage they claim on rear tires. I really need a rear that will go 5000 and i would be happy. Might try TKC-80s next

I run Karoos as knobbies on my TransAlp (granted, a little heavier than a KLR but otherwise pretty similar). I only get about 2000-2500 useful miles out of them, but usually have 90 minutes of +60mph pavement on each end of my weekly rides when I have them mounted (I have a spare set of rims with more road oriented knobby tires, where 4.5-5k miles is about normal). The back squares off and the front cups. I put up with the mileage because I like the way they work off pavement and they work fine on pavement.

Having said that, for a 2k mile mixed surface trip I have planned later this year I think I'm going to give TKCs a try, as my BMW friends say they work well in both environments with decent mileage.

Drool Away Folks

I am on about 6500 on my Mefo's and have about 45-50% tread left.
They are plenty good for a 50/50 tire and free shipping wins me over.
Trust me I don't baby them either...

Kenda 270 with 2000 miles on it. Looks like it has another 2K left. Front still looks new to me.

Like the Karoo but they just don't last. I usually get around 1500 miles on them. I have had better luck with the 606. I just got the Dunlop 908 which is supposed to be better but time will tell. Those Meofo's sure do look like a good 50/50 tire. I might have to give them a try.

Nate in Elk Grove. Still looking for the ultimate DS tire!

Aww schucks! they don't have and 18". That 21" sure looks good though. It's time to mix and match.

I heard that swmototires was going to start carrying Mefo this spring. You might check in with them - they'll be more likely to carry an 18" rear than the KLR only site.

Fred has em at Arrowheadmotorsports, not sure about his shipping cost though but I have had numerous orders with him and always super fast service. Very good vendor.

I just bought a set from Fred on Wednesday in Moab. I broke em in on the White rim, then the next day we did Fins and Things and Poison Spider. Then today, 150 miles on the slab home at 70-80 MPH. These tires ROCK. The only condition they couldn't handle was deep sand (I'll post some pics in the ride report), but that's a lot to ask from any tire that is intended for 50/50 use. They hooked up good in everything else, quiet and smooth on the highway, no discernable wear. So far, pending more info on the long term wear, they are definately worth the $$$.
