As hard as I tried, I couldn't find any info on this structure (39.377775,-75.524461). Related: Two old farmers were up there while I took pics and said a woman had purchased the building and the surrounding acre with plans to rehabilitate the place...good luck on that. Another angle. ![]()

My first thought was a shot tower but it looks a bit short for that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_tower I did a bit more digging it looks like it is an old light house. Well at least That's what they call it in the following link http://www.panoramio.com/photo/83483188

I had both ideas but it doesn't look right for either. it looks like a strange place (and very different) for a light house.

OK it is the Vogel House and Tower..........apparently owned by the state of delaware
I found this on some sort of geneology forum QUOTE not sure about the Deakyne Landing part but the Deakyne Cemetery in Cedar Swamp Wildlife Refuge as well as the Collins House etc, were all sold to Shell Oil for a refinery in 1962. That refinery was never built as two residents, John McQuail and Holger Harvey went as far as the Supreme Court and fought Shell Oil and won. Thus Gov. Russell Peterson was able to enact the "Coastal Zone Act" that now keeps the Delaware coastal zone free from new industrial use. The land was later deeded to the State of Delaware through a series of actions involving Delaware Wildlands as a holding company and then to the State as fundsd of donations became available. One of the largest Deakyne/Collins/Ward et al homes still stands but as of 2007 was about to go under due to vandalism as the state no longer kept a tenant in it. Sadly its on the National Historic Register and was beautiful. The cemetery remains as well, but is also often vandalized. I had pictures of it in 2004 and again in 2007 and the damage was greater than I expected. I have some pictures of the cemetery as well. Mr Vogel owned a nursery there for years and what appears as a light house was his water tower for his nursery. It is a shamee that people do this to beautiful old structures. I believe there are at least 5 other homes, though I don't know of their status and many cemeteries on the property and with the state budget, I doubt any are going to be repaired. I can hope but.... I am not a Deakyne. I'm doing some research for Historic Odessa Foundation and constantly hitting walls trying to separate out some of these families who intermarried many times over many generations. END QUOTE There is a facebook page asking for money to restore it. SO TwilightZone got it with his Water tower guess

Great research machinebuilder!
Now that I think of it, the "lady" the farmers referred to was probably from Preservation Delaware (I was a member years ago). They offered to let me ride back to the cemetery (they were in possession of a key to the gate) but I didn't have the time that morn.... maybe next time.
