One of the many historic structures that I live close to.

(I wish drink was still the same price.)

From a recent European bike trip...here's the Castle of the Duke of Normandy in Falaise, France. It was built by William the Conqueror and his successors from the 12th century on, after his conquest of Britain. It got beat up pretty bad in World War Two (during the next successful cross -channel invasion) as the Canadians, Poles and Americans encircled a fleeing German army in the battle that takes the name of the town. Looks like a long term (1,000 year?) restoration project!

How long would it have taken to build that? Took me a long time just to build these steps, and that's with bloody Allen block.

Maybe only a couple of years according to Wikpedia. (Cheap, skilled labour and the right materials must have been readily available in these days!)

Ruthven Barracks near Ruthven, Highland in Scotland are the smallest but best preserved of the four barracks built in 1717 after the 1715 Jacobite rising, set on an old castle mound. It comprises two large three-storey blocks occupying two sides of the enclosure each with two rooms per floor. The barracks and enclosing walls were loopholed for musket firing, and bastion towers were built at opposite corners.
