Hey Grant!

Could you tell us a little more about the rally style fairing - could be a really good mod as these bikes are hard work for any time over the 100. The factory had the Desert Storm sporting a rally fairing on their list for a while but I don't know if anyone saw one in the flesh.

Just a reminder from earlier in the thread

Also I have some spare plastics - if anyone has some ideas or recommendations for change in profile and colour schemes it seems a good place to start.

Thanks for the tips on the guage set-up.

To piggy back on what John mentioned about the rally fairing I would look into it as well. The stock headlight mask seems to redirect the air perfectly to the bottom of my helmet and face shield and I'm short.

Hello guys
Shame the wind is directed straight in the bottom of your helmet lorretto ! lol .
You could do a set up like Dr. John. He's got a simple screen that looks the bussiness.
I dont know boys if you'll have any joy obtaining the rally style fairing from highland, i think i tryed. if you could get it this would deffinatly be the way forward as it'll be a bolt on job. How i love bolt on jobs !!
As for me i was gunna run a simple fairing mask like Johns but noooo!, after he posted that fantastic pic of the highland rallye bike i decided i had to have one like that.
I'm going with a Africanqueens fairing kit off a mz660. This is very expensive at 1000 euro and is a real drama to fit (im having it fitted now).
It comes with dash mount bracket, twin lights and the fairing piece. Basically you have to bin the standard instruments, weld this bracket to the steer stem on the frame then you have a flat vertical dash at eye level.
Then you fill it up with what ever takes your fancy. Im going trailtech computer (cheaper than IMO) garmin 278 gps, control lamp from touratech( 6 x idiot lights) and accessory power sockets. You could also have a road book if you had a need for it.
Anyway wish me lotsa luck having this fitted, ill need it.

John , i hold you responsible

A 2007 - on ktm SX front guard looks good , they have nice strenthening ribs down them so they dont flex when caked up with mud (good for highspeeds) come in silver too i believe .

Pictures

Hi Grant,

Great project going on, look forward to the results. Any chance of some pictures of your set up? Pic of the front guard would be good as the original (KTM) flaps about far too much at speed.

It's a good call to do a proper fairing as I'm on my second screen. At high motorway speed the thing has cracked in all sorts of strange places and not at the stress points. I'm making some additional mounting points to try and dampen out the wind caused vibrations - that should give some longer life.

Hey Dr.J
Im running a 2007 KTM SX front guard on the highland now as can be seen on page 13. They bolt straight up too from memory as early highlands ran ktm spec front ends.
Also a good shot of one on the new KTM page 14.
I think you can get them in silver ,hope this helps.

Hi Grant

that's the same as the one I am running. Could really do with something more rigid as it flaps about at high speed. Rock and Road cut the front winglets off theirs which helps a bit and I have spaced mine down at the front to get a bit more downforce. Keep in touch.

Grant's new front end

Grant (Niceonetrev) has sent some pics of his new windscreen/fairing/lighting set up.
Looks really promising - I definately want lights like that.
What an improvement, I wonder if the will take a HID bulb set up?

Where have all the Highlands gone?

Just for info guys - I now have all the old Rock and Road stock. So you can see I'm really interested.

Includes 2 used motards, 1 unused motard and 1 new rolling chassis. There are a few spares and the special tools needed for engine work.

I don't expect to get rid of any for some time as I think they will do well in a couple of years time. In the meantime I hope that Johan's developments will bear fruit and allow me to fit them all with a better inlet system.

BTW I have ridden both the used motards and they run really well and that gives me confidence.

Wow that there is some serious Highland stuff on many fronts.

Grant: awsome what else is there to say.

John: Quite a stable, 4.5 Highlands must be some kind of record. Keep us posted when you start to move your duplicates.

Jonah: That aftermarket Harley inlet that you had a photo of looks very pricey but here in the States I think some of the bikes came with stock twin inlets. The stock Harley intakes and trottle bodies are common take-offs when the bikes are upgraded, meaning cheap in the US. [check ebay USA using Harley throttle body for a search and there are a couple of intakes with dual butterflies] I have no idea what would be entailed to retrofit it to the Folan but if it looks like it has some promise I can grab one here and try and ascertain if it is feasible or if it makes more sense to send it to you to evaluate, I can do that.
