I finally made it out in to the ocean, not just the Gulf of Mexico or lake paddling. I went about 1/2 miles off shore. The waves were not too big, but enough to give a fun ride and a few dips, until I came back in and errrr, rolled
too bad I did not roll back up (I have not had time to practice and the ocean surf did not seem like a good place to try). I was parallel to a wave and went to brace on the shore side and there was nothing there, over I went. I was close to shore and pulled it in. I did not realize my skeg was down, it must have been ripped off when I dragged it ashore (got washed ashore). Does anyone know if this is a fairly easy repair once I have the parts? I have not been able to look at it yet, just noticed it as I rolled it over because it started raining.

you can't brace towards the shore (as you discovered) , which is sorta the opposite when you're in the river. in the river you brace downstream, in the surf you gotta brace into the waves. I too had to learn that the tough way, grinding my head into the sand ........

OK... I have been kind of thinking about trying out kayaking. I'm getting old, fat, and when I look in the mirror my shoulders have down right vanished.
So, talk to me like an idiot. What would you recommend to a total novice. I've got lakes, rivers, and the Pacific isn't that far away.

you can always start out KLR-ish and get a cheapie Pelican Kayak to see how you like it. I would recommend a nicer paddle though and a comfortable life jacket that doesn't get in your way when seated in the boat or when paddling . from there your wants and desires will grow and from that your decision about your next boat will be a bit more focused as then you'll have a better ideal of what you want to be doing. your original boat will then become your buddy boat for your friends and family .....

I should have paddled parallel to shore further out and then head back to my friend's house, but I tried to do it in the surf zone and took a dip (which I didn't mind since the water is warm), but I did not want to break the skeg. I ordered the parts today, $59 shipped, next time I'll hopefully remember to pull up the skeg. |
