New owner here. I rode Hoologan's 650R on a 3 day Nevada trip last weekend and was hooked. Sold my wr250 and picking up a plated 2000 XR650R on Wednesday. Has Q4 pipe, Clarke tank, 3/4 inch risers with Renthals, K&N filter and a bunch of other mods.

Edit: I'm gonna need a bigger tank for DV and such. Acerbis 6.3 or IMS 7.0 Gallon tank? Thoughts?

I use uni. But as long as you stick with foam you should be okay.

Stock is actually best for filtering. Maybe not for flow.

I run Twin Air, but i think they are all pretty much the same with Moose, Uni, etc.

Stock's are pretty pricey but seem to fit the best and have nice thick filter media.

how many of you guys are running bigger batteries? what battery and where have you placed them?

I am looking into a small LED light bar and wiring GPS and speedo to the bike. I have noticed the well known dimming of lights at idle, and I want to get away from that. Right now I have a 200W stator running threw the ricky stator reg/rect, so the whole bike is DC.

I am thinking about adding a battery in a small tail bag and running accessories off of that. I do have dual outputs from the stator and was wondering if there would be any benefit or issues to running all power threw 1 reg/rect to the battery than to devices.

I hope to get the lighting and light bar setup and either making a taller rally style fairing or just going the BMW Dakar wind screen route and cutting an opening for the light bar.

Actually as long as you FOLLOW the K&N directions you will have no issues. Got to use the K&N grease to seal around the air filter unit. Also spray some tacky filter stuff on it vs just the K&N oil. No dust is getting in. I bet a LOT of people skip the grease around the filter to seal it into the air box.

Follow directions people.

Edited to say: It's why I said use the tacky stuff and don't just use the K&N oil. I think there might be enough room to put a foam filter on top of the K&N I'll tinker when I put the kiddo to nap time and see if so I'll take a picture.

K&Ns suck for dusty riding, when clean they pass dust period. All you have to do is look at Baja racers, the people running the K&N are running an oiled foam prefilter around it and often a filter skin. Unfortunately on bikes it's hard to layer the filtration. K&Ns actually don't start filtering well till they get dirty, the design relies on trapped dirt particles to help filter out other dirt. When they are clean (and oiled) fine dust particles will pass right through them. The size that gets through is very fine so it's not like it's going to toast you motor but most off-road applications don't rely on the K&N alone. When oild foam doesn't pass anything why install a filter that doesn't stop everything.

I run one on my sand rail because it's makes a good base to support the 2 other filters layered over it.

Battery mount

I copied RIDEFREAK's design on this sort of, I used 1" x 1/8" angle iron to make the box, 1" x 1/8" strap for the mounting tabs and fit everything to mount to the cable guide bolt hole in the case and the rear motor mount bolt it's very sturdy. After it was all welded up I lined it with 1/8" rubber, I have a Trail Tech reg/rect mounted on the back of the box too.
