Woody on my SM set up are you able to source new hubs front and rear for an 06 KLR to start the build? I would prefer black wheels with stainless spokes due to the saltair here in Guam, I have 2 1/2 more years here. The front doesnt have to be 3.5 wide per say just want to get a nice SM look and feel. If you have the time and can source the hubs I can give you my credit card info to get things rolling. Would you have a WAG at how much it might be? I think the hubs themselves are about $500.00 or a little over for the pair. Thanks. Oh and appreciate the snow while you have it cause this Michigan boy misses it in Guam.

inquiry ...

Hi Woody,

I sent you another email directly a couple days ago, probably should've asked my questions here; I've got a 2000 Kawasaki W650 with a bent rear rim - maybe .75" to an inch from side-to-side. Is that something you folks can fix? Any estimate re: time & cost to do so? Anything special I need to do, or just remove the tire & ship it to you? Do you need the sprocket carrier assembly and the drum brake on it?

I see you're well respected on the list, would rather send it to you than Uncle Bob's Wheel Straighteners and Wholesale Storm Door Company down the road.

Thanks,

Robb

robb,,all we need is the wheel assy,,if ya ship with tire on it 's super easy and safer,,all ya needis to tape the wheel between two sheets of cardboard with my address on it,,,don't know what's the matterwith yours,,,normally straightening /trueing run circa $100 plus parts,,,we always call back with an accurate estimate...if your spokes are broken ,,we have oem ones or we can upgrade to stronger ones and even do the ultimate SUPERLACE,,,

later,,woody

What info would you need to get us a price for an 18inch rim and spoke set for the front of KLR 650.
Most of the folks that have approached me are interested in the DualSport focus for their transplant.
What's the best bang for the buck price for a 2.25 wide 18inch rim and spoke set for the front hub of a KLR 650.
The 18inch rim gives us more options for DualSport tires.
Thanks for any and all information you can give us,
Rod
here's the data...

the most reasonable prices i can come up with are,,

$75 for custom heavy duty either 9g {won't have todrill hub}or 8g ss spokes & Zartan nipples

2.15 x18 rims vary in price for color and brand,,

BWOE,,Buchanans silver Excel =$162

we have a variety of silver Excels for $145.... a Did gold $147,,,several black RAD rims $119

also have some good takeoffs spokes n rims for less a,,frist come first served,,,

Thanks Woody, I like the deal on the spokes.
I'm thinkin a 2.15 is on the narrow side for some of the 4.60-5.10 tires we'll use for the big KLR.
Can you give us availability and price of wider 18 inch rims, say 2.25 if they're even offered, or 2.50 which is the same width as our rear rims.
Be great if you had some of these sizes in the variety of silver Excels or the black Rads.
Thanks again,
Rod

well i was wondering about that,,,,i didn't have the parameters of what tire sizes you were going to use,,,in the old days,, a 2.15 rim accomodated 4''/120-90 tires ok,,still could

remember the narrower rim offers more protection in the rough...it's when you use lower profile /aspect ratio tires that ya need a wider rim

there are no 2.2'' rims available,,the next size up is 2.50'' and Sun rims only come in 2.75'',,,,RAD and pro wheel don't make rims wider than 2.15''

the 2.5'' inch stuff is rapidly disappearing from the us market,,,since i noticed everybody is out of em and aren't reordering them no one wants to sit on 50-100 rims which is the usual quantity,,,the dilemna is that Buchanan and i are one of the few places that drill rims,,so that forces the others to buy rims predrilled for a specific application,,,i can modify the drilled holes if they are close enough to the new pattern i want

ok roughly you will be looking at $180 +/- depending on brand and color

i may have a few used ones too

FYI,,the 2.50 rims have a deeper drop center necessitating shorter spokes,,,will have to check on that too again

and although your rear rim is 2.50''wide it's 17'' diameter i believe

help!!!! we have to find a better deal /source o KLR parts!!!!

just got off the phone with Kawasaki dealer,,,for 06 parts,,,tried various combinations,,,,to minimize costs,,,ie usually we can buy a complete wheel and part it out and have it cost less than buying the bits n pieces,

remember that all manufacturers do it different ,,,some don't sell indivdual components,,,some don't sell a complete hub assy you have to build it up from individual pieces= most expensive

anyway,,,there are NO complete wheel assy available,,,only a complete hub assembly,,,front=$363 #41034-1153 rear $387 #41034-1154 ...//that's $750 !!! in the same leaque as a pair of Talon hubs....so i don't know where your $500 a pair comes from,,,racer discount/sponsorship???,,that's close to the dealer price perhaps

i only get a few bucks off and the dealers DO NOT WANT me to pass on my discount or the'll cut off my supply,,i can understand that,,,,,they want to help me AND they do not want me to be their competition,,i do understand the predicament,,,,

i keep an eye out for used stuff to help you guys out for these projects KLR hubs/wheels are scarce around here for sure,,,and there are no current aftermarket hubs that i know of that would readily adapt,,,

so if someone knows of a more reasonable source i'm all ears

or if someone has a good set of hubs, wheels that we can use for this project HOLLER or pm me thanks woody

A quick thank you for the time and effort I know you've spent to answer our questions Woody.
I now feel I have someone to help my DualSport Bros out there.
My only remaining question would be the cost of redrillin a used rear rim to correct the dimple and hole angle difference, for use with a front hub that was used with a 21 inch rim originally.
Thanks a million,
Rod

FYI,,,we usually charge$30 to redrill /reangle your rims,,,$20 to you if i supply the used rim,,,,no charge if i supply a new rim...

PLEASE NOTE,,,sometimes we have to go to a larger nipple to accomodate the changes,,,it all depends on the individual OEM applications and what we want to accomplish now...it behooves one to get used rims that are drilled as close as possible to your oem scenario,,,the most difficult and my least favorite is to convert a rim that was originally used with a large drum brake and then use it on a
small diameter spool/disc brake hub or a conical hub ,,,those conversions have radically different drilling patterns

Don't ask me how I know.
You have been more help than anyone could expect and I thank you again for your knowledge and your willingness to go the extra mile. (or two in my case)
I and I'm sure many others will find it a pleasure to do business with you,

Hey Woody,

I just picked up a 625 sxc and want a cushioned rear hub (probably just OEM) and some black excel rims...front and rear. Have you got a good line on the hubs or should i buy them myself and ship. Let me know what you suggest and a guess at a price. Thanks!

Kevin
