I haven't raced in about as long as GS Dave. Moving about, running, etc. all took priority over riding there for a bit.

UW Hockey tournament this weekend, so even if I wanted to race, I already had commitments.

If you haven't done a 12hr pair before... it's important to eat. Little and often.

Is it a night or day event? Or a bit of both?

No doubt! We just got a post card of the L'Eroica from some of our friends in Rome. Really lights the fire for an italian ride.

Greetings from South Africa!!!

I arrived yesterday, and am staring at my very first Ironman, which takes place in just over 4 days... Scary.

I got into cycling in no small part due to this thread, back in 2006... I first announced my entry into the sport in 418 in this thread... A few months later I'd start training for a triathlon... and I've been hooked ever since.

So, thanks everyone for all the advice, tech help, support, and stories. It's been a blast following everyone's adventures here, and it's been fun being part of this thread. I have no idea how Sunday's gonna go, but I'm excited about it and really looking forward to the race (even though it's gonna HURT)!

(And yes - I owe y'all some bike porn... getting the bike back from a local shop tomorrow, got it tuned up for race day!!!)

Cheers,
Francisco

My road bike was pretty much neglected last year. I brought it in the basement, gave it a good cleaning and tune up, put some new carbon fiber bottle cages on it and got it ready to roll. Now lets see how it feels to be back out there....

I just got back from a city council meeting in Sanford, NC to learn the fate of a downtown race being opposed by a single business owner. I even spoke to the council in the public comments time. Talk about being nervous!

The race is still going to happen but the organizer was forced to make some serious concessions.

Short story is that an antique shop has its storefront on one of the streets being closed for the crit. The store owner claims that he was never asked about the effect of street closure on his business and petitioned city council to either cancel the race, or move it off his street. He was busted on the point of not being asked about planning for the race when printed emails surfaced in the meeting and he was proved to have declined the request.

He started fighting the race when he found out the city's annual pottery festival is happening the same weekend (the festival and race cross weekends once every 7 years). He claimed he would lose $1500 in sales that day, so the race organizer decided to pay him the money and offer a raffle to the participants for gift cards to his store. The race organizer combined fields to shorten the race day, set up a shuttle to get customers to the antique store, arranged for a truck to haul anything customers may buy back to their cars and coordinated with a scout troop to offer assistance crossing the street for anyone that may feel nervous with the pace car and races going on.

The shop owner did not concede and still fought it. The final showdown was last night and the city council voted to keep the race as-is. They also scolded the store owner for declining the request to be part of the planning committee for the race.
