When all you have is lemons… put the headwind at your back and get a KOM.

I need help

No, not that kind of help.........well maybe. Moving along.

I've got a Surly Long haul trucker. I want to change /upgrade to a crankset that
is a 44/36/22 chainring. The Shimano XT has those, but I'm sure They won't fit a Square Taper BB

I've got a UN 55 BB, the BB shell is 68 mm and internally theaded. I'm stuck in the eighties with BB knowledge. What will work if any thing

I've got bike all apart for painting and I wanted upgrade while it's apart.

Sugino XD600, but I would stick with the eighties tech as the fifth chainring bolt won't be hidden under the crank arm. You can find an old Deore crankset for pretty cheap on ebay.

Or upgrade to an external bearing bb with a two piece crank/spindle jobber.

You have alot of possibilities. What are you trying to do? Budget? or no budget?

You could grab something off of ebay (or an inmate) or go with something modern, which would include the BB.

I want get lower gearing I've got 48/36/26 now. The crank will not allow any lower gearing than 24. Bolt pattern on crank limitations I guess.

I can get a Shimano XL for about 2/3's normal price. Not a cheap componet, but before I buy it I want to be sure which BB to buy that will fit in frame. BB's are different than they used to be.

The XT is a nice crank. Do eet! (just change out the BB too while you're there)

Oh, and remember the old rule of thumb: 1 tooth in the back is worth 3 in the front. May be easier/cheaper to run a bigger cassette than it is to swap rings.

I can get an XT crank through Nashbar for $200. it comes with a BB sweet I want to make sure it'll work with my frame before I buy it. The Surgino crank it came with is fine, and I may stick with that.

I'm already running a 11/34 cassette maybe 11/36 would give me gearing I'm looking for

Thanks

Watching PEZ cycling live feed of Sunny King Crit in Anaston Al. It seems to be a big race when they get cat 4 riders from all over southeast and Cat 2 guys from all over the country.

Cassettes are pretty cheap and easy to swap. New chain (or lengthen it) though.

I have some older XT square taper stuff laying around. I will take a look and let you know. It would be cheap.

Don't resist! If that's a pre-2014, it's a Lynskey fabricated frame.
