New training routine

I've got a new training routine: Escorting my girlfriend to work. She's been thinking about bike commuting for a while, but between winter and her general nervousness with riding on the road, she's put it off.

This morning she finally gave it a go, and since I work from home and have a pretty flexible schedule, I rode escort. Most of the 11 mile ride is on quiet residential backroads, but her office is about a mile from the intersection of 2 major interstates (one of which she has to cross), in an area full of shopping centers, office parks, and of course, lots of fast-moving traffic at rush hour.

It's a pretty challenging environment for a cyclist, but she handled it really well. When we reached the office, she commented that she'd been scared, but it hadn't shown at all in her riding.

This afternoon I'll drive up there to pick her up, but she's hoping to be able to ride it both ways before long.

Nice job. When I start work this weekend I can end up working at two Hospitals. One is very close to my place and the other is about 10 miles. I hope to be able to atleast ride my bike to the closer of the two. I've been lazy but I've sorta planned a route from home to school that would be 90% dirt.

You made me think of this. I've been carrying around a little folded photocopy of page 54 in the May 1992 Bicycle Magazine. For all these years I've used the little chart on that page to help create training programs and meal plans for myself and those I've coached.

I googled The James Hegberg, started an email to him, and then decided to do a better google search for the Calorie Consumption Guide. (For what it's worth, the chart on the website mislabeled the AVERAGE SPEED column as CALORIE CONSUMPTION) It's worth printing out and hanging on to it, in my humble opinion.

What do you all think?

How many calories does cycling burn? That's a tough question. All the variables that can occur during a ride--uphills, downhills, headwinds, tailwinds--plus the type of bike you're riding, the surface you're on, and the speed you're going can cause swings in calorie consumption.

Still, weight-conscious cyclists want to know. This chart, developed for Bicycling magazine by James Hagberg, Ph.D., professor of kinesthesiology at the University of Maryland in College Park, answers the question for the most significant variable: speed. It's well-known that the energy used in cycling varies dramatically as wind resistance changes. Simply choose your average speed, multiply your body weight by the coefficient for that speed, and you'll have a close approximation of the number of calories that you burn per minute.

Going uphill adds to the energy cost. Coasting downhill burns no extra calories, of course, but the combination of going up and then down always uses more energy than riding on flat ground. In general, add an additional 20 calories for every 100 feet of elevation gain during a ride (an average value for a cyclist and bike with a combined weight of 150 pounds).

the problem with a mog is, the top speed is like 50MPH and thats winding the piss out of the little diesel. the wheels are just too damn tall to go much faster. they'll go -anywheres- off road, if you're willing to go nice and slow.




(thats a 62 'mog 404)

now, this beast is a Volvo C303, which apparently -can- go 75mph on the freeway -and- can go just about anywhere...
