As some of you know, all 950 variants have a safety recall for the rear brake- what's needed depending on the year/model. Barry (who got his SE a couple weeks before I got the SM) lost his rear brake last week. I got my recall notice Thursday and since I was close to my 4k mile service I made a service appointment for next weekend and asked if they could do the brake also. They said (is anyone surprised?) the parts are backordered. I wasn't worried though, because mine's been fine.

Well, 80 or so miles into today's ride the rear started going away. Still had some action but the pedal traveled really far. Real pita, because the roads (especially the corners) we were riding today were pretty gravel-strewn and I would have liked having a rear brake. Odd that it happened just a couple days after getting the recall notice. Oh well, so it goes.

I did a Mity-Vac bleed when I got home, and it seemed to restore pedal travel. But I didn't feel like suiting up after cleaning the salt off the dirty girl.

We'll see what it's like on the ride before dropping it off at the dealer.

I got the the recall letter(s) for all three of my 950's. The two early Adventures and my 06 950 SM. The letters were EXACTLY the same. So, why does the service guy say my bike needs ony the membrane and not the whole deal? Mine still works fine BTW...

Not true. At least not in this case. The parts that need to be replaced do vary by model and model year. The recall letter mentions lots of parts, but specifically states that the one thing that will be done to all bikes is replacement of the membrane. Some bikes might need a bit more. The actual TB details what needs to be done for each year and model.

If not illiterate, then certainly ignorant.

When I called my dealer Satuday, he asked for the last six digits of my VIN. From this he said I only needed a membrane.
