So that's something to remember if you find yourself without a clutch in the middle of BFE...

As an aside, I turned over 43K miles on the SMR this weekend. The SMR now has more miles on it than my previous high mileage bike, a 2002 Triumph Sprint RS that I put 42,968 miles on. Can't think of a bike I would replace the SMR with, so it'll get a lot of mid-life preventative maintenance this winter, and I'm just gonna keep putting the miles on.
Can also use regular mineral oil available at any pharmacy....

That's encouraging about your mileage....

Last month I rented a 990 Adventure Dakar to ride Colorado and Utah. Put 1,600 miles on it in 6 days and enjoyed it, not trigger tripping but relaxed, enjoyable , do anything bike. Have since been toying with the idea of getting a used 990 Adventure for a second bike. Got on my trusty 950 SM on Sunday for the first time since Colorado and man....do I love this bike. Much, much more exciting to ride than the Adv, feels like twice the HP but if I am going to be honest , also must take into account the difference between 11 ft elevation, and 10,000 ft elevation, Akro's undoubtedly make a difference..bottom line is I am still thrilled with my SM.

Good to know. I had bled my system maybe 500 miles ago and it went soft (that's what she said) randomly last night. I'll give ATF a try.

FWIW (as a bleeding newb), I did the pump the lever, hold the lever, open bleeder, close bleeder about a half dozen times and it felt like a solid lever to me. Then I took about a half hour and let it gravity bleed (recommended by a friend) by cracking the bleeder open, letting the bleeder ooze fluid, and keeping an eye on the reservoir. I probably completely purged/replaced the system via the gravity bleed as it was a fast ooze. If nothing else, I now have enough clutch fluid (quart of ATF) to flush/fill/bleed every week if I want :-)

I probably won't get more than a few day rides in before the snow flies to see how well it works out on the longer term, but at least it got me home for cheap. I need to spend some quality time with my new-to-me 530 EXC before ski season starts!

I used 3W fork oil. Gravity bled for 5 mins. Then bled like brakes. Then pulled lever closed and let it snap open about 20 times. Each snap would have bubbles coming up in reservoir. Topped it up and it's been fine since June. When I gravity bled it, I just let it leak all over. Nothing a 10 second spray of brake cleaner didn't clean up.

Yes, it was messy letting all that fluid dribble down the slave and kickstand onto the parking lot. But there were lots of paper towels available by the gas pumps, so I tried to clean up the mess as best I could.

Here's a link to full ride report with photos:

Those Dick Mann replicas were fast! I've been Jonesing for the new 2012 Ossa trials bike but can't justify the price tag. I suppose since the Mayan calender says the world will end Dec 2012, I wouldn't have to pay it off! Anyway, my old one actually has a seat and holds enough gas for a 2 hour ride.

Where did you ride in Colorado?

Originally I had planned to ship the SM out to Denver but ended up renting from House of Motorrad ( which was very convenient.) We did Denver to Gunnison, through Ouray and Last Dollar to Moab for 2 days, La Sal mtns, Island In the Sky, Dead Horse, Castle Valley, Slick Rock, Paradox, Durango, Telluride, Tincup, Crested Butte and back to Denver. You can really fill it up in Colorado.

Next year the SM gets shipped out. It's a little more trouble to ship the bikes out, price is about the same, but I like riding my own bike...although the SM wouldn't do as well on unpaved roads.
