MX style pants for the street?

Any recommendations on a MX or motard style pant for warm weather. I want these primarily for on road use so some CE type Armour would be a plus. All the MX style stuff I've seen has very thin foam at best. Seems like the street specific stuff is meant to be worn as over pants.

Have you thought about perforated leather racing pants?

I've got a black pair of Teknic Thunder pants, and some Alpine Stars on order.

Even behind an RT fairing, I don't find them too hot. They have the armor I want, and skid protection I hope for.

Wear them below an Aerostich Roadcrafter, up to and over 90 degrees. I'd get a lighter color, but I'm in Michigan.

What are your parameters?

You generally wear separate knee/shin pads or knee braces under MX pants. I've not seen any with built in pads like you see with the road stuff. MX pants also offer minimal protection against asphalt abrasion...remember they are intended for dirt applications, so don't expect them to hold up well to a 60mph getoff.

Jtt makes a good point about dirt bike pants shredding in a fall, but nothing is cooler than MX pants in severe heat.

I used them in Mexico. I wear good hip/tail bone pads (SixSixOne or Fox) under and dirt bike knee guards. The best thing is they ventilate very well and come in light colors. If vented leathers came in light colors and could match the venting I would use them instead. All leathers I've seen are black. Miserable in heat.

The dirt bike pants will tear and burn in a ride on pavement. Your under pads
will save you for a while but who knows how long? I ride dirt bikes and have several pairs. I'm used to them and am willing to risk it when its super hot.

Up top I also wear all dirt bike gear. Long sleeve light colored Jersey, Elbow
guards and sometimes a back pad. Other times I wear my Joe Rocket Alter
Ego jacket. Good armor, excellent venting when opened up.

I have an older set of the BMW summer pants that I use for dual sport/off road riding. They seem like they would work much better in an asphalt fall than mx pants, pretty durable. They have built in knee armor that is pretty good for off-road, though not as protective as a full separate knee armor set up. It might even be CE armor, I don't remember.

They are expensive, but work well when it is hot and you can use them on or off road.

They are really a 3 season pant. I use long underwear for fall/early spring. I'm thinking about buying a cheap pair of nylon waterproof overpants to throw in the bag in case it rains. They are not waterproof....

No way will they be as cool as the Moose Sahara pants, but they breathe pretty good and mine have a zip vent on both legs (and the entire pant breathes a bit).

did I say they are expensive..?

places like motorcyclesuperstore and motorsportsoutlet have sales
on dirt riding sets. Brands like Thor, Fox, O'Neil, MSR, Moose and more.

Typically about a $130 gets you pants, jersey and gloves. Gloves are useless
to me, I like more protection, but the jersey and pants are good. Lesser known brands, even less $$.

What about a pair of Darien Lights? Pretty slim and armored. I would think the pant legs would tuck into an MX boot. Maybe someone who owns a pair can chime in. I know when I wear my Moose or MSR pants while on the road I do not feel protected at all.

Try Vanson's supermotard line ... they have a full suit and also jacket/pants. The pants might work for you.

Basically, you get "street grade" protection with some added comfort in the suit.

Some of the alpinestars stuff seems quite durable and has quite a lot of cordura. But I think they would fail at the stretch panals. Ive some Thor pants which are like a cordura over trouser and are ok but still hot.

The Vanson supermoto stuff looks very interesting.

This and a suitable jacket for me is akin to hunting for the holy grail...

Regular mx pants are not intended to provide much abraision resistance as is needed on the street. Stick to supermoto or street pants.

My FAVORITE off-road/DS pants are REI Mistral pants. Schoeller fabric, super comfy, little better than nothing for roadrash--but probably better than cheap mesh gear. MX armor underneath. I should see if Annie would sew some Keprotec wear panels onto them.

I gave up looking for COOL mesh road armor.

I like the Draggin jeans cargo pants with my fox MX protectors underneath. Cooler than over pants more abrasion protection that MX pants and the MX armor gives me more than adequate impact protection, If you really want to be safe you could add a pair of those padded compression shorts under the cargos for additional hip protection. Cool thing about the draggin jeans is you can throw your el-cheapo rain gear on over them I wear frogg toggs and in the hot summer rain we get down in south east NC I don't roast.
