Go ahead and install the shock, it will be just fine.

I just finished installing the same shock on mine and it is perfect.

Mine flooded pretty quick, within 10 minutes of stopping. The seal in the petcock was tore and the dealer said no longer available after 10 years. Where are you draining it at? From the bowl?

Hmm, I think it's possible a KLX300 kit works. Pretty sure that's what was installed in my bike just before I bought it. Check RonAyers and part #'s and their reverse lookup. I'm at work right now, I'll check out availability and price of the 300 kit and post up later tonight.

10 years is not that old. You can order tons of stuff for really old bikes. If you're sitting on the bike, on the right side is a allen wrench hole with a hose off the bottom. Turn that a bit and the gas will drain out the bottom by the shock.

It almost looked like a mix, but it had a layer of water sitting in it too. All the brass jets and seats were all corroded green

You drain the carb everytime you ride?

You might want to search ebay as you can still get tons of parts for the KLX 650.

Here is one vendor with a petcock kit.

Your dealer is full of BS as my local dealer is still able to order parts although it takes him about a week or two since he told me that it comes from japan. Recently, I broke my taillight lens when some idiot rear ended me at a DS Rally while I pulled over to help someone. No real damage other than my tailight lens was cracked. The local Kawasaki dealer had it for me in a week.

Thanks, Jon...I don't doubt it. The dealer here in Waco is not the best...they prefer you buy the new one Kept trying to sell me a KLR before I found the KLX That kit won't work, I have the Cali Petcock with the vacuum valves. I am gonna try to find replacement non California style.

my fuel tap on my bike says
down is ON
left horizontal is OFF ( no fuel to cab)( arrow to the left)
up is res reserve

there is no mention of a PRI standing
also in th MOM motorcycle owners manual
2.0 l as reserve 0.53 US gallon

perhaps you have a (CA) model California.
there are two kinds of fuel taps on the C.

CA model have 4 points to connect the tubes to.

others 3, two from the tank and one to the carb.

sound like the fueltap is not working correct.

The petcock is vacuume operated ... meaning if the engine is running ... the fuel will flow in all positions ... when the engine is not running ... on and res positions will not flow fuel ... pri ... by passes the diaphram ... and will allow fuel to flow with the engine not running

My 95 KLX650C3 is non CA model and it also has the vacuum petcock. Unless yours is different, I think they are all operated off vacuum in on and reserve position with prime position just opening the valve w/o vacuum or with motor off.

Good luck.

In the ON position, my bike would leave a puddle of gas on the ground within a couple of minutes The rubber for the valve itself has a tear which I think is allowing the gas to free flow.
