The only worry one might have is in bear country, but as long as you don't keep food in your tent, or in your bags at night, there is little chance of one molesting you. Serialcee is right, an airhorn will suffice in most cases. The cities are much more dangerous than remote places.

Carry the air horn in the woods and wear a side arm in the city
I feel safer in the woods than I do in traffic.

I pack a roscoe most of the time, but moreso the more remote I am. I've run across some fairly kooky individuals (none with ill intent thus far) when in the boonies.

I figure its pretty much 1850 out there, no law and nobody to hear you scream

So, you either trust that every person you run across off the beaten path is honorable and cool with good intentions, or you pack heat in case they aren't. Personal choice.

Camping at Hot Springs Campground on the Hart Mountain Willife Refuge. First night out on a Bend to Idaho offroad ride. Seven crashes, one broken ankle the first day out-its all good....

Near Granby Lake, Colorado

First time posting a photo, so I hope this works!

This was a picture I managed to capture while eating breakfast near Granby Lake before embarking on a 21 hour ride of dirt, trails, and interstate back to Eastern Kansas.

Darkhorse, google Earth comes up with Beartooth Pass's in TX, FL, MD and WY, which one were you at?
It does look great, isolated.

You cowboys in Kansas still using peacemakers? I would like to own one. People see that on your hip, they most likely leave you alone. I wear my SW mpc 9 on my hip ridin, even in traffic. I get a lot of odd looks but they don't invade my space or ride up my rear very often. Don't think it would do more than piss off a bear tho. Thank you 2nd amendment.
