Oldies

I have taken Harleys to a bunch of weird places, took pic of some roads, but seldom with the bike in it. I was able to find a few through the years.

Back in 1990 I heard about a way to go UNDER the continental divide at Pipestone Pass in Butte, Montana. I was able to talk my friend into it. The ride through the tunnel was no biggie, but the shortcut down and back out was a bit exciting.

Then, a few years later I was in Telluride and asked the guy at the information booth "if you only had an hour or so, what would you do in this town" I heard him say "go to the end of town and take the road up to the top of the falls". I guess what he actually said was "Go to the end of the road and look at the falls". I ended up riding to the top. Apparently it was supposed to be a four wheel only road. I guess if you add my feet it was sorta a 4 "wheel" drive. The funny thing was, after I went to the top, and got back down, I had a pretty girl that had seen me come down take my picture. As she was walking away, my I had my hands off the bars and the front wheel was on a large stone. The bars turned, and the best I could do was let the bike down gently. I could have done without the pretty lady "coming to my aid", well, since she did not hang around afterwards.

In '95 I was in Moab looking for an interesting ride. Someone said to take the dirt road off of Deadhorse Point and take it back to town. It was a great ride, and I got a lotta weird looks from the dirt bikers. There had been a little rain recently and there were a couple of streams to ford. Nothing much over the floor boards, but it was a new experience for me.

last but not least, and not exactly a Harley, I rented a Buell in '98 in California in November. I was up north somewhere, enjoying the nice weather and decided to head inland. A bit of surprise for this New England boy to go from a nice warm sunny beach to heavy snow in a short ride. When there was no longer any black on the black top I decided that it would be prudent to turn the rental around. I must have liked the bike, because I bought one the following year. Still have it. It's for sale.

You might also notice that there is a helmet on the ground here. I finally smartened up and started wearing a helmet even when I did not have to.

There were plenty of other times where the only thing keeping the bike from sinking lower into the mud was the saddlebags, but no pics. Times I have had to lay the bike on it's side and grab the front wheel and drag it around because there was not enough room to turn the bike around. No pics, so it did not happen. I have a pic at the Mother Featherlegs monument, but only of the monument, not the bike.

I stopped riding Harley's when My last one lost an argument with a Mule Deer. Miss them, but with retirement looming, I have moved to somewhat cheaper bikes. I will be back, eventually, maybe.
