The very first time I got my license in Denver, it was on a Honda 350. Then when I transferred my Texas license to Washington I had to retest because Washington had a tiered license system and Texas did not. At that time I borrowed a friend's Honda 700 Nighthawk. I was able to transfer my commercial truck license for only $40 but apparently a motorcycle is much more dangerous than a loaded tractor-trailer.

Like this one except it had standard bars instead of these buckhorns.

January of 1961. I had just turned 14 in December.

Take the MSF course in WI and they waive the formal course at the DMV.

Rode the super sherpa provided by the course. Much more manly than the 250 nighthawks of 125 eliminators.

Theres a test for braking in corners. You have to ride through a sweping left hander And be ready to stnad the bike up, and perform an emergency stop when the instructor, who is standing on the outside of the corner, raises his arm. So I'm wheeling around this corner, and the instructor raises his arm, I stand the bike up, Slam on the brakes, The front suspension compresses, and up goes the rear tire a good 24" RIGHT IN FRONT of the guy. That was my first "brakey" and it scared the ever-living Dookey out of me. The instructor looked PISSED for about 2 seconds until he saw the astonished look on my face, realized it was unintentional, then he laughed and waived me through.

All the other students waiting back in the line were pretty impressed though

1977 on a 1974 Kawasaki H2 750, the first bike I ever owned. when I bought the bike I had only a couple of hours riding time on a buddy's XL250.

It all worked out OK....
