Ha ha, I can't believe how stupid I was to overlook that.

Too spoilt by not having to worry about any predatory animals over here in Europe. Yes, I would probably carry something to fend off bears too. Thanks for that.

Bear spray also works. Works on humans too, or so I have been told. The advantage of bear spray over pepper spray is that it is legal to carry (at least where I live).

I have no problem carrying bear spray - in fact I'm gonna buy some for my upcoming trip to Montana (See the link below; The Next Big Thing).

Having said that, my trusty 10mm is going with me as well. There's Grizzlys up there and I will be stealth camping about half the time.

Be sure you use the bear spray for the grizzly. The 10mm will only piss it off.

I'd be tempted to use the bear spray like bug spray ....
or a bug bomb !
If they smelled that would they want to mess with you ?
I'd be a human skunk!
I know they go pretty crazy when they get hit with "the stuff" ......
I'd just want them to go away,
What do bears do with skunks?

No Doubt! Most of you have never seen a Grizzly up close and personal. Nothing at all like messing with a black bear.

Here's the thing you should know about bear spray. Listen carefully.

In high concentrations it drives them away. In lower concentrations it attracts them. If you spray it on your clothing it's like a french fry smearing ketchup on itself.

I used to date a girl who lived and worked at a black bear conservation area in North America. She reckoned that you could almost always get them to leave by standing next to something that made you look bigger, surrendering whatever food it was they were after to them (IE toss it out of the tent to them) and standing your ground. She said 'fighting' them was second only to running away* as a sure fire way of getting mauled by one.

*She said despite their size they could outrun and outclimb almost anyone.

Anyone reckon that's accurate, or an conservationist's "you never need to shoot animals" wishful thinking?

You don't shoot the grizzly, you shoot the guy next to you in the foot.

I'm thinking it's for a last resort anyway. If it's on top of me gnawing on some part of my body, I'm not overly concerned with pissing it off at that point.

It's a moot point anyway. I'll be lucky to see one (and I really want to - from a distance). Chances of actually coming in contact with one are virtually nil.

I made some of the route suggestions for the MT 1000. Two that were adopted take you right through prime Griz country. Keep an eye out you may be treated to a view of one. (or more)

Use your nose as well. They are stinky bastards.

I'm reminded of an old joke that goes something like this:

Guy gets a job working on the Alaskan Pipeline and on his first day the office boss issues him a .38 revolver as part of his standard equipment.

"What's this for?" he asks.

"Well, there's grizzlies around here, so you might need it."

When he gets out on the job and is assigned to work with an experienced crew, the field boss points to the gun proudly carried on the greenhorn's hip and says "You know, the best thing you can do is to file the front sight off that pistol."

"Oh? Why's that? So I can draw it quicker if a bear attacks?"

"No. So when the bear takes the gun from you and shoves it up your ass it won't hurt so much."

I was thinking of this one earlier..

After a number of attacks on hikers and campers in Alaska, the Department of Fish & Game released the following advisory:

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears. We also advise utdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.

Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in it and smell like pepper.

edit: dang
