I believe the XT600 has one of the easiest to kickstart engine of all bikes.

With properly working automatic decompression, the XT600 engine should be able to be started (using the proper technique) almost effortlessly.

If you ned to use strength to start the engine, then something is wrong or you are doing something wrong.

Thanks for the replies guys. I had to take the wheel off for repair. It will need new spokes. So once I get that sorted I will start on the carb again. I put some marvel mystery oil in the gas and ran it to lube and clean the inside of the carburetor while it sits with the wheel off. I am looking for a set of spokes for this '84 XT600. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? I see kedo has a set for the '87-'89 XT600s but they don't list anything for the '84. Where there some major changes done to the XT in '87?

Today I cranked the kicker over by hand while looking at the lever on the head connected to the cable. As I "kick" it over by hand, the cable isn't moving. I haven't verified whether the cable inside is intact or broken, but I am now also wondering what is going on inside the little panel where the cable connects at the bottom near the kickstarter. On other similar bikes there is a lever and cable mount outside the engine. So does anyone have a diagram of the lower part before I get inside of it? Thanks, you guys rule. Looking forward to having this worked out, if I keep it up, I'll be scheduled for knee replacement in my 50's. Already gets it sore in the knee joint sometimes, this is my all-day everyday ride.

I weigh about 220# I have to stand on my lever to initiate the kick . no way from a sitting position

Thats all wrong. When the compression release is working OK, the you can "kick" by hand (dont do it though)

Zombie_Stomp, you can also search for a workshop manual for the XT550. You should find it easy enough on the internet. It has the "same" (almonst) engine.

OK. Today I pulled on the bottom of the cable and the housing just came right out of the hole with no cable inside. That means the cable is totally broken. Sounds like the last guy to comment about his weight being needed has the exact same problem. The PO of this bike broke his cable too at one point since his parts box had the broken cable in it. So my next question is, WHERE DO I FIND A CHEAP REPLACEMENT? Thanks. Zombie out.

So my '84 has a DG exhaust with a supertrapp end. It's a bit rusty and kind of loud but no holes and it's solid for the most part. But, I'd like to replace it with a stock exhaust. If anyone has one sitting around gathering dust, let me know if you'd like to get a few bucks in exchange for it.

Iffn any of you guys want to buy my 1985 XT 600 red and white up here in MN let me know. I have to thin the herd. It's worn out and works but I don't plan on using it too much anymore. Any reasonable offers accepted. Not listed anywhere else but here.

Hey guys, Anyone know of a choke that will fix a 89 xt600 that is manuel? Im done messing with the cable and have always preferred a manual choke anyways? Any ideas?

my 2003 xt600e had a choke-knob on the carb itself, yamaha often reuse parts, so perhaps it will fit?

Ive tried looking but no website lists a 2003 XT600 for there OEM parts, the last year most sites list the XT600 is 89 i think. Any ideas?

The XT wasn't imported into the USA after the early 90's and therefore all the sites in the US offering Parts Fiches do not go later than this. If you have a European XT (last manufactured in 2002 - Yes, I have a 2003 registered one) the go to http://www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/inform...catalogue.aspx

I'm using a carb from a TT600 (59x type) and planted my existing XT600 choke in it. So TT600 choke has to work.

As far as I can tell carbs of XT600 (43f and 49r) and TT600 (59x) are identical, although jetting might be different.
