Buying a new one
To the collective wisdom of ADV.
I am suddenly and unexpectedly in the market to buy a new Rolex. My oh my the prices have gone up! I will be in the UK and in Switzerland in the coming weeks, but exchange rate issues seem to make US sources the best right now. I could go to the local shop and negotiate a decent price, thus supporting the local economy and ensuring after-sales support and authenticity. It also strikes me that I may also be able to obtain one from a reputable Internet source at a substantial savings. The dealer at nearby Tyson's Corner outside of DC, who I have been using for service for the past few years, seems to have prices which really aren't that competitive. Anybody have any thoughts or experience on someplace reasonable to look on line, or for a retailer in the US that is reputable and does mail order? Thanks in advance. |

Check out the prices in Saudi. They will haggle, unofficially. What model is of interest? The prices of used models are falling fast, especially the expensive ones. Check out Blowers if you are in the UK. They regularly get used but unworn Rolex, Patek etc and have a very good reputation. http://www.blowers-jewellers.co.uk/

Daytona with a steel Jubilee bracelet, maybe GMT-2. I try not to be around Saudis when I am trying to gamble or buy stuff - they always outdo me. Learned that the hard way in A Cairo casino about 25 years ago. |

I picked up a Yachtmaster for my wife here from the authorised dealer, got it 20% below UK list price. The Daytona was on extended order the last time I looked. Check out the prices of the used stainless sports models on the Blower site, you might find something mint condition there, may be useful if you are heading over there. They also have an extensive gold Daytona selection. The 18ct white gold ones are very nice.

I can see maybe buying a Sub if I had the cash, a Daytona is up into the new motorcycle price range.
I'd rather have something with a less complicated movement and G-Shock for times when I actually need a stopwatch.

Why always Rolex??
look at Sinn, Tutima, Panerai, Glashuette, Lang & Soehne, ... Rolex is the Volkswagen of fine watches... everybody has them.

I was waiting for someone to answer that... If you really investigate what goes into a Rolex, and how it's made (just the movements and steel used in the casing), and how many "firsts" (in the watchmaking industry) they created - then you simply cannot compare them to most of the brands that were mentioned. I have other brands as well but, a Rolex is a Rolex. Definitely not a Volkswagen... PS - My friend has a Panerai (his 2nd) and both have had many problems. He's had to return them for repair far too many times for the use and time he's had them. His Rolex is 3 times as old and has never had a single issue. My Tutima and one of my Bell&Ross watches both have had problems. So did an Omega I had. I'm not saying those brands aren't very good watches. But a Rolex is indeed a better timepiece. That's why their resale value is so perfect in comparison.
