It's not like the mammoth was using it.

Yea, they hunted the last ones to get those handles. Fossil Ivory, legal and not terribly expensive - turns out there's plenty of dead WM's up in the frozen north and they keep digging 'em up.

I've got a nice one where the elements turned the ivory a greenish tinge.

I'm inclined to believe that owning ivory is a bad idea- because you have no way of knowing the source- and they have a harder and harder time marketing the stuff they're illegally harvesting. Labeling it as Mammoth seems a thinly veiled end run if you ask me. It's a beautiful knife for sure- but I'd be more impressed by an intact bull elephant in the wild.

Mammoth Ivory is not only legal, it is ok because back when Mamoths were here, there were no poachers. Now Elephant Ivory is a different story if it isn't collected prior to the thirties from what I hear it is illegal if dated after a certain year.

Read "The Thin Green Line" by my neighbor, Terry Grosz. If you're gonna support this sort of thing you should know what you're supporting.

Mammoth ivory has nothing to do with poaching...is this what is addressed in that book?

That statement is not entirely true- and that's why you should read the book. The subject isn't just poaching, it's the marketing of illegal substances under falsified ID. Are you confident you can tell a piece of "mammoth tusk" from Walrus? From Elephant? Unless you harvested the stuff yourself from a carcass on some melting glacier, you really don't know what you're buying- and that has tremendous implications that are easy to overlook or miss. Hell, that's why the illegal trade goes on at all.

Elephants are a pest.

Unless you're some conservationist who lives in the developed west somewhere. If you're the typical African farmer, they are just a nuinsance that keeps raiding your crops and destroying your property. For my uncle they are.

I can perhaps understand what you're saying in relation to various contemporary ivories, but Mammoth Ivory is 10000 years old and fossilised. You wouldn't get elephants or walruses with teeth like my knife handle, even if they had British dentists.

I'm out of that line of work. Besides, you can't prove a thing.

Nice of jabba to keep up the JM tradition. Anybody else got a nice watch?

How do you know what he says in the book is true? many people who write books like that have their own adjenda....even at that, Mammoth ivory is easy to tell from Elephant ivory because of the way it looks and feels since it is fossilized...And yes, I can tell mammoth from Elephant and whale tooth ivory.
