I have a friend who wears his watches under his wrist, he bought a Casio Pathfinder which is very thick and large in diameter. He is Irish so gestures with his hands like I do and when he does, he knocks his watch on the desk and it makes a loud CLONK. He edits video on a non linear system as I do and as he is editing you keep hearing CLONK a bunch of times. I once asked him to spin the watch round on top of his wrist and he did and it was silence until the next day when it was back round the underside. Good thing we don't edit in the same room anymore.

I saw a fair number of old Navy cargo flight crew members who wore their watch that way including my Father who crewed on C-130's in the 60's and 70's. He still wears it that way today out of habit. Never thought it was strange until I got older and started spending time away from Naval Air Stations.
